NAKID

Has nothing to do with "getting it right". A lot of it is personalization. The other stuff is getting rid of things they HAD to do to comply with various regulations. The tail is one of them....

I'm still not sure what the issue is. Most of the people who like the old monster have one. I think it's nice they're trying something different.
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

Regardless, the 696 is still FUGLY. And it sucks to ride.

I spent some about an hour on one today and as far as I'm concerned it needs only one mod. I flush handle, because it's a toilet.  [puke]

I think I would rather have no bike in my garage than a 696. If the new Monster looks like these images I will never buy one, period. I'll be making the switch to another brand when it's time for a new bike.

I hope Ducati does read these forums too because they can take their 696 and stick it up their collective asses.

You sound like a tiny little cry baby. :'( You did not ride a 696 for an hour, because if you did you would say it rides at least good for a beginner model. Luckly Ducati does not listen to people like you, because if they did they would have to close up shop since Harley Davidson has the market cornered with selling "classic" out dated, pieces of polished crap.

I love the look of the older bikes but I fell in love with the 696 and its modern styling, so I bought one. You don't see me crying do ya. [roll]

Face the facts that Ducati is updating and modernizing all its models and is not looking back. They already admitted that they made a mistake by not updating the monster earlier.

Dan, take a break and calm yourself down.  It's never that great of an idea to come onto a board and start talking smack to one of the more senior guys.

Maybe it is and maybe it isn't.  One thing for sure though, most of the people who have less than kind things to say keep their comments to the bikes themselves and not the people who buy them.  Also, keep in mind that quite a few of the tired old complainers, bashers, haters and sore losers are the same people who started this forum and made it the great place that it is.  Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I think it looks better with the sss and different exhaust. I wish they would redesign the passenger footpegs. The whole shape in my opinion is bulky, matches the subfrafe closely, and sticks out and doesn't fit in (its silver could be black i guess)

Murdered Monster

I would say in about 13 months when Ducati is releasing the last of the "10 new models by 2010", we won't even be having this conversation. The original monster will not be for sale anymore. The original style monster is beautiful and will always be remembered as the first naked bike. The people who own one will be proud to own it, and it will always be looked at as a work of art. Just like an original Mustang or Corvette. Those cars have been updated over and over again and people still love the originals, probably more than the new models. But on the other hand, people keep buying the newer models also. We all own monsters because it's a Ducati. You don't here anyone comparing a Triumph to a Mustang or Corvette do you? A new generation of monster fans will emerge, which is exactly what Ducati wants. New blood = new $$$. I hear people say, "I don't like the passenger pegs, or the tank is shaped funny". I'm sure that when you first bought your baby it wasn't exactly the way you wanted it. That's the beauty of a monster. It's a blank canvas and you're the artist. Half the fun of owning a monster is modifying it. Honestly, I had never really paid attention to the monster until the new model came out. Now that I know more about the monster, I wish I would've owned an older model years ago. But the new one caught my eye and now the monster family has grown.  Like it or not, the new model is here to stay. But think of what the originals will be worth years from now. Have you seen the price tag on an original mustang lately?

Dan,

You may feel a little better but to completely feel better you should go take your medication. And lots of it.

First off, who the hell do you think you are? I didn't ride one for an hour? Yeah ok dude, I guess there isn't one in my garage right now then, right? I guess it's not sitting next to the 748 and the S2R1K either. I must have imagined it.

Just because you came late to the party and the 696 was the bike that was offered when you arrived it doesn't make it a good bike. The 695 is a way better bike.

You may think the 696 is a great bike but I have a news flash for you. It's not. It's not a good beginner bike like you seem to think. I could sit here and go down the list of all the things that are wrong with it but I'll just hit the highlights for you.

Styling:

Although it's never easy to try and replace and Icon, Ducati seems to have a habit of screwing it up. First it was the 999, and now the 696. I will admit it took a few months for me to even look at a 999, but I have since owned one and now I love the style. That will never happen with the 696. They completely ruined it.
The vents in the tank cover are the dumbest thing I have ever seen. The horizontal exhaust pipe taking a sharp turn up and across the motor not only looks stupid, I can't think it does much for the performance either.

Comfort:

What the hell were they thinking with that seat. It pushes you all the way forward towards the tank (cover) and mashes your balls. You may not have noticed that though..... [roll] It also puts too much weight on your wrists. Your's may be strong enough to handle it.....  [laugh]

Handling:

Oh boy, where to start here. The only good thing about it is that it turns in quick. It's twitchy and unstable and grabbing the front brakes at speed completely upsets the chassis. It feels like a wet sponge until you hit a bump and then you just bounce over it rather than soaking it up. Just for laughs, try riding it over a series of bumps mid-corner and let me know how that goes.

Brakes:

For starters, the brake lever is way too far away. I almost had to take my hand off the throttle to reach it. Not good if you need to stop fast. The brakes are pretty powerfull though.

Power:

Here is the only place they didn't drop the ball. Give the throttle a twist and it want's to go. Granted it's not a S2R/S4R buy any stretch but for an entry level bike it has plenty.

Conclusion:

As an entry level bike one would think that it should be as easy to ride as possible. It's not. All the things I mentioned above contribute to this opinion. It's uncomfortable, unstable, difficult to ride with confidence, and because of the reach to the brake lever, it isn't condusive to stopping quickly. Does that sound like a good beginner bike? the answer is simple. No.

Ducati definately dropped the ball on this one. They don't seem to be staying true to their roots, they seem to want to be more mainstream now. I can understand wanting to be more competitive and wanting more market share but I don't think watering down what they have been doing for decades is the right thing to do.

What do you ride? a 695? doubt it... so when you compare apples to apples and not some tricked out superpowered monster to a entry level monster.
Pound for pound the new monster out handles the old monster. and I'm certain the new M1100 will blow away a lot of naysayers. give it a chance, ride it when it gets here. then talk your trash.
and by the way, bet you have a SSS monster... that's not the original monster either. that's way more styled then the original monster was so dont tell me the new monster is trying to be something more than it's supposed to be.
I'm so fricking tired of this crap. the monster is a ducati. and if you keep wanted to trash the company for creating a great bike that may not be to your style (even if you guys are blind) then sell your freaking bikes and buy a damn Ninja.
You don't deserve to have the italian passion.

 [puke] [puke] [puke] [puke]

Dude, you really have no clue. You think that just because it says "Ducati" on the tank it should automatically be revered.

I bet you have a house full of Sony products too. Don't worry though, you're not alone. Alot of people buy things just because of the name even if they are pieces of $hit.

And for the record, I have had the opportunity to ride a 695. BCM was kind enough to lend me one a while back while I was up there. It was a blast. I would recommend one to anyone who was thinking about getting into the sport.

Do you think maybe there is a reason for it? How can so many people be that wrong?

Come on guys, ease up...   stop the personal bashing.  Getting this fired up at each other over a motorcycle is ridiculous.

If it comes back to you, you've

Hey man,

I'm just responding to the bashing. All I did was mention how much I hate the 696 and these guys bashed me.  >:(
