It makes sense to me for Ducati to have a few spy shots running around, get some free feedback from the die hard Monster fans.

Makes a hell of a lot of sense, let the die hards see it, and they know that some will like it, some will hate it, but if people pick on certain parts, then before the official release in november they can quickly change some details and parts.

Creates a lot of hype before the show as well.

It's all but been proven that Ducati visits theses types of forums. Look at changes made to late model Monsters, look at what happened when they released photos of the 696. The initial pics showed the subframe being silver. Most people hated it and started photoshopping it black. Well look at the production model...

I agree, although i wasnt around during that time i am 99% sure that manufacturers have people checking out enthusiast sites seeing what kind of reaction new models, or "leaks" cause.  I also wouldnt be that surprised if "leaks" like this are on purpose.  Its the cheapest form of feedback and ideas since many owners will take charge of photo shopping their dream version.

they could put a 10000000000cc motor on it and it is still a 696!

no thanks  [puke]

the older ones are so much nicer

I could not agree more...
But there is a new generation and they love the modern design.
So...Ducati...if you read this...:
Make a smart move
1. Go with your new design to make the new people happy
2. Put the old design into a classic line like the Paul Smart/Gt 1000/Sport to keep the old farts (me) happy
Thank you Ducati

(saving money for the Venom anyway ;)

Regardless, the 696 is still FUGLY. And it sucks to ride.

I spent some about an hour on one today and as far as I'm concerned it needs only one mod. I flush handle, because it's a toilet.  [puke]

I think I would rather have no bike in my garage than a 696. If the new Monster looks like these images I will never buy one, period. I'll be making the switch to another brand when it's time for a new bike.

I hope Ducati does read these forums too because they can take their 696 and stick it up their collective asses.

What do you ride? a 695? doubt it... so when you compare apples to apples and not some tricked out superpowered monster to a entry level monster.
Pound for pound the new monster out handles the old monster. and I'm certain the new M1100 will blow away a lot of naysayers. give it a chance, ride it when it gets here. then talk your trash.
and by the way, bet you have a SSS monster... that's not the original monster either. that's way more styled then the original monster was so dont tell me the new monster is trying to be something more than it's supposed to be.
I'm so fricking tired of this crap. the monster is a ducati. and if you keep wanted to trash the company for creating a great bike that may not be to your style (even if you guys are blind) then sell your freaking bikes and buy a damn Ninja.

I'd get a Brutale 910R first  ;D

OK, two things:

1.  You can't compare Ducati putting a SSS on the existing Monster to what they did with the new Monster. Name one thing on the 696 that it shares with the old Monster as far as style.

2.  Who are you to decide who deserves to have "the Italian passion"?  [roll]

I just find it ironic that a lot of people who claim they love the "old monster" so much are the same people who have some of the most heavily modified bikes around.

If it was *that* great y'all wouldn't be taking a saw to the frame the first weekend you got it.

Oh please.  You're basically saying that if someone doesn't embrace and fall in love with every single model and design that Ducati comes out with they don't have "the italian passion" - get a grip.  The new Monster is a stylistic a departure from the older monsters, and IMO "borrows" liberally from other bikes (like the Brutale) in its design.

Sure, there are some nifty touches here and there, but my '04 S4R in "Not a real Ducati color' Blue and white is the first motorcycle I ever fell in love with - and when I saw the 696 in person it wasn't even close.  I'm not going to say it's a piece of garbage, but just not my cup of tea.
