guy is selling one in town. He wants 2200 for a 65 that is complete and a 62 parts car. I offered him 1300 for the 65 by it's self. He's going to call his son and see if he'll take it

here's the ad, no pics:

should I offer more if he won't take 1300? the car is all there....alot of the parts (bumpers/lights/interior) is in boxes. the motor looks good (says the carb needs rebuilt...but it runs now). couple rust spots, but nothing major...one spot is rusted through on the bottom of the trunk lid.

anyone have a 65 or anything close?

Woohoohoohoo! Two personal records! For breath holding and number of sharks shot in the face.

Le Pirate

thanks for the links, I'm looking over them.

I'm trying to find some sort of list of things to look over before I actually hand the dude some money.

From those three sites you should be able to find the info you need. Plus look at some badass bugs and buses while you're at it.  [thumbsup]

We had a '66 bug back in the day.
I remeber hotwiring it for jotrides. ;D [evil]
One thing I do remember is that that year had a 6-volt electrical system.
I assume you'd have to upgrade to 12v. as I can't believe you would be able to find the 6v. components anymore.

That is correct.  VW went to the 12v system halfway through the '67 model year.

Le Pirate

the car is currently 6v, but I'll be converting that all over...the wife said she wants a modern radio/speakers in it (which is fine with me).

I was seriously thinking about HID headlights in it though  8)

....or is that going too far?

okay, okay....

I'm not planning on going all original, though most of will be. Besides the stereo, and carpeting...the rest will be pretty much stock. I'm thinking I'll do a nice interior (carpet, insulation, etc...) but leave the outside pretty much all original (except maybe the headlights...it's a safety thing  ;D)

scene: farmer on a front porch, rural location. sunset.

on the horizon, headlights appear. the farmer swivels in his chair to get a better look at the approaching vehicle.

time passes, the farmer re-adjusts his position. cramps set in.

more time passes. the farmer stands up, looks at the approaching?? headlights, shrugs, goes inside.

exterior front porch. dawn. rooster calls fill the crisp morning air.

the farmer creaks out through the old screen-door, glances to the horizon where, impossibly it seems, there are still... headlights approaching...

hours go by and now finally we are able to make out the shape... 62 Beetle!

UPDATE  8)

the guy called me said that his son wanted atleast 1600 for it...I told him that I wasn't going to pay anymore than 1300 for it (I don't really neeeeeed it...so I can't justify paying too much more). He called back this afternoon and said its mine!  ;D

he's even going to trailer it here for me on saturday  [thumbsup]

I'll have pictures as soon as it gets here. I'm so excited.

HIDs aren't a bad idea if you don't mind looking like a poseur. They draw about 20 watts less (35 instead of 55) than a halogen bulb while lasting longer and being brighter. The less strain on an antiquated electrical system the better.

You know you can stuff a Porsche spec flat four into there without much trouble...An old 914 or 911 E engine (forget about getting a 356 motor, that would blow the budget), then you are looking at over 100 hp right out of the box, much more if you decide to do some tweaks. Or if you are truly insane I'm sure a Subaru flat four could be persuaded to fit...
