How the make the beast with two backs do I uninstall IE? I would like to have it banished to hell if at all possible. Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel doesn't do it.

Other than buy a Mac you're screwed.

It's part of the operating system.

installing an alternate browser and setting it to the default isn't enough?

fwiw, you'll still need ie for windows update to get all your product updates. that's the ONLY thing i use ie for on my windows box.

Mother

yep

IE5 is an integrated part of XP

you can reformat and not update IE and it will obviously stay at 5

then just never open it and use mozilla or whatever you traitors to the covenant use these days

I use Firefox as my default.

But IE still constantly runs in the background. How do I make it only open on my command?

Have you checked Task Manager to see if there's an IE process still running?

Yep. And its running. And when I end the process it just pops right back up again.

Here's a quote from here: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10166_7-6219945-1.html

There is a way to remove Internet Explorer from Windows, but it's not worth the hassle. Whether or not you realize it, you actually do need IE; it's used throughout Windows. For example, Outlook, Word, Windows Explorer--basically any apps that need to render HTML--all rely on IE to some degree. If you remove IE, which requires editing your system registry files (something I don't recommend unless you have experience and a good backup first), you'll then have to associate these apps with another Web rendering product in order to view, for example, HTML-enabled e-mail. Not impossible, but I'm sure you have better use for your time. Instead, simply drag and drop your IE icon to the trash and just forget about it.

It mentions editing the registry. Have you done that at all? I can find what entries need to be edited if you haven't tried it yet.

I actually don't HAVE to delete the thing. I would just like to have it NEVER run and/or connect to the internet without me telling it to do so.

Possible?

wait, what's running? explorer.exe or iexplore.exe?

iexplore.exe is internet explorer...

explorer.exe is the windows program manager or windows shell.

if iexplore.exe won't stop running, i'd be concerned. explorer.exe, on the other hand, is kinda required.

How concerned should I be? I have that ever reliable Windows firewall running. So I'm all safe and secure right? Right?  [roll]

Ran ad-aware. This did nothing. You are going to tel me I have a virus or something aren't you?

I really think it has something to do with the myriad of other programs that use IE (as mentioned in the quote I posted).  :-\  I don't know how you can force it to ask before starting tho.

But I'm not an IE guru. So sorry.  ???

that's weird

iexplore.exe is just the interface to the IE software.

it is hard to unlink the libraries that lock IE ot the OS

but if iexplore.exe is running in the background, you have something else going on

i use firefox exclusively -- no iexplore.exe is running at all

something else is kicking it up.  i vote for adware or malware.
