What is considered a comfortable living in NH dollar wise?  Is it an expensive place to live?

i've only been here for a few months, so my experience is limited

but there is no state income tax, and no sales tax.
property tax might be a little higher than other places (depends on your experience) but i think that is off set by the lack of other taxes. and if you rent (like i am at the moment) then you are essentially tax free.
If you drive the nicest car in the neighborhood, work in a cash business, and don't pay taxes, you're either a preacher or a drug dealer...

As Herm says there is no income or sales tax. They do incorporate a road use tax...based on the price of the vehicle.

Property taxes are high, but property values are lower so it might balance out depending on your perspective. The thing is they have a fee for everything

Depending on what part of the state you live in your electric rates might be the highest in the country...we have more than one electric co.

There is little to no infrastructure for natural gas...propane and heating oil prices are high...heating oil is selling at about $3.50/gal cash..Propane was almost $6.00/gal delivered if you didn't use it for heat.

Wood used to be cheap...you could buy a 7 ish cord load, log length, for ~$400...the same load is $1300 today due to hardwood pulp prices.

The state motto is Live Free or Die...there is a gross misstatement involved...They mean Live, Freeze...then Die.

All that said...

I like it here.

My sis lives in Manchester and owns a 2 family.  The rent from the bottom half pays her mortgage.  Housing is less the more you head away from the MA border.  She says she will never leave NH due to the cost of living.... but just like every where else.... all comodities are high.

I'll add more later when I have more time.

I just wanted to add that the no income tax is a bit of an untruth.  If you're self employed you may be eligible to pay a business income tax and a business enterprise tax.

Interesting.

Probably I won't move there, but I got head-hunted for a job out that way.  The company is based in western MA and I guess I'd cover the NH territory.  Pay could be potentially be double what I make now.  They're offering 70K to start with potential to hit 120K, 15% bonus, per diem expense account, car allowance etc.

It's the same job I do now, they're just bigger, have more I could sell and look to be better in all ways except location.

Can one live normally on 70K there?

You could...easily.

If the checks come from a Mass company you will be subject to Mass income tax.

That's ok.  I loose 27% of what i make now to state and federal taxes.  It can't be that much different.

Man, I could do ok down there.  If someone's cutting metal, welding metal, or building a structure there's something I can sell them ;D

Well, it's less expensive to live here than up in Seattle.  BUT..it's deceptive.  Pay is lower..IF you can find a job, that is!  Houses are a heck of a lot cheaper too except they nail you with property taxes at the end of the year!   [roll]

Austin is a cool city though if you haven't visited..you should!  Why trade a winter state for another one?!

Not only a winter state, but a worse winter state.

I did think of that [laugh]
