I even checked to see if I could just rent a cheap car and everything is sold out except for the monstrosities that rent for $200/day.

Now if someone could give me a lift, I could certainly contribute gas money, but methinks that is going to be unlikely at best.
My buddy just said that there's some kind of public transit train service between the two areas. Is that true? Does anyone know where I can get maps/schedules/fares?

You can look here
http://www.metrolinktrains.com/
Looks like you have to take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner to Oceanside then the Orange County Line to Union Station in downtown LA.

What stop? I'm in SD, so anything that I can get to that runs later hours is good.

Last train leaves LA at 2210, so it doesn't look like a viable option for getting back here.

Either Capistrano or Mission Viejo would have been easy to get to.

I have no idea where these are or what transit system they're on.

DRAT!!! Next time. I'll be back in about 2 weeks, but it'll be the luck of the draw if I actually get a Wednesday night off again.
