i was all bummed that i didn't get to catch star trek on friday (because of a dive trip)... coincidentally, the roddenberry dive team was also diving at casino point and hosting a special presentation of the movie at the local theater... sulu, uhura, and gene roddenberry's son were sitting right in front of me.

i actually liked the story. in fact, i really like that alternate timeline started when nero (and spock) travelled back to the point of kirk's birth frees them from the confines of the "known star trek storylines."

comic relief has always been a part of the trek movies.

if the visuals bother you, sit further back. the quick cuts are easier to deal with.

i'm somewhat pleased with how the writers gave themselves a lot of room to work within a star trek "parallel" universe and not step on the toes of evertthing else that's even been filmed or written about the characters.

Oh, great, now you ruined it for me.   >:(

Just kidding. It'll be a long while before I see it.
I'm well aware of my being in the minority on what I'd like to see in movies so I just sort of have to suck it up. Action doesn't mean much to me since it's usually just a crutch, and CGI has made it so much worse. I think it has its place, like in Lord of the Rings, but so often it's just unbelievable and ridiculous.
I guess on one had I might like the alternate reality thing, since I loathe when they just pave over previous movies - see Batman Begins, which actually made me angry that it sucked so much by the end - but it seems like a copout too? Sort of "and it was all just a dream"-esque. I guess maybe I'll see it sooner rather than later just to resolve that.
That rules about them sitting right in front of you.

All about the mighty dollar.  With a sequal/prequal/remake you have a guaranteed audience and with something new you don't.  And 9 of 10 of the most watched trailers proves it.
Yeah, I hate people.

i had a conversation w/ rod (gene's son) at one of the local watering holes after the movie. he's an avid diver and has just started promoting his roddenberry dive team events. i may actually do the san miguel island and yukon dives with them.

i also got to briefly talk to george takei in when i was heading down to the point to do some more diving.

both were really nice guys.

Sinister

Saw it, on Saturday, and really enjoyed it.

They definitely left it open for more in the future; I would actually like to see this writing/directing/cast team do another one.  I thought the cast was a pretty strong one.

Just a generic Star Trek spoof but very funny if not lewd.  ;D
