Howie

It saddens me to hear this.  At least he is lucky enough to be with good humans.

Good luck Polpetta...do the best you can to make the years count...

unfortunately large breeds bring their own unique blend of joy and heartbreak with them   :-\

Polpetta

Yep, thanks ... our plan is to keep love'n on him and spoiling him and his brothers for as long as we have them.

I knew his life could be shorter but I also though maybe I would possibly have him a lot longer. My Belgian Shepherd/Great Dane Zachery lived till he was 16. So I  guess that is why this was quite a shock to me. I think Sacduc has been more realistic about this. He has always joked with me that I think they will live forever. Well they do in our hearts and memories.

So far what I have read is and been told is about 6 months to a year and then their are some cases of them lasting up to 3.

Has anyone here had experienced with this?

Brimo, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss.  :'(  We lost one of ours in February and I can't imagine what it would have been like to lose the other one at the same time.

Rat, that is quite the story.  Thanks for sharing.

K & M, so sorry to hear about Jasper. :(  Here's hoping that he hangs in there a long time for you.  I know he couldn't have a better home to take care of him in his illness.  Please give him a big hug from us.

Any suggestions on how to treat blistered pads?

I guess Otto and Henrik's pads weren't up the challenge of playing hard for two days on the concrete at daycare.   :(

As far as I know you just have to let them heal, which they do pretty fast. I've had dogs do it before (actually it looked more like they tore the skin off). If they'll leave socks on, then that seemed to help.

Aww.  Poor guys.   :P

Brian's first day at a place he doesn't go to any longer had pea gravel.  A half day and he was lame for days.

Time heals heels. (Or pads in this case. And maybe the socks as Triple J suggests.)

Just read the sad news about Brimos and Sacs & Polpettas "babies".  Sorry to hear.

Yeah, best to leave the blistered pads to air out.  You could put a little bag balm on them, helps them heal and keep from cracking worse, and the dogs don't like to eat it.  If you are worried about infections (not usually an issue) then do a soak in some iodine diluted with warm water (as long as the dog will tolerate it which in my experience has been maybe 2 minutes. Can you blame her?  ;D
Cleet goes to work with me and loves the truck. Haven't tried Daisy yet. They both were rescues and are great dogs.
