He is my old man, Kipmik.  10 years old.  He weighs about 115 lbs and in his younger days could pull 2200 lbs on a sled from a dead start.  He save my life twice.  1st time he pulled me home in the middle of a storm when I couldn't find the trail or see the hand in front of my face.  The next time he ran off a bear that was about to have me for breakfast.

He sounds like one hell of a guy!  What do they call the sport in the photo where a dog hauls along an XC skier? I recall it starts with a "J" -- I've seen folks out like that a couple of times and been mighty jealous!

Hey AK!  Thanks for posting those pics.  All of those dogs..especially Kipmik..have to be some of the most beautiful dogs I have ever seen!   What an awesome breed!

Ha..google search pulled this up.  Are they known for being good guard dogs?  I know they chase off bears!

I'll have to get a copy of that sign.  I'd say my boys aren't great guard dogs except for moose and bears.
They love people and are too IZ_ looking to be scary.  They are much more alert when we are in the wild and they have warned us of approaching strangers when we were asleep in our tent.  They know what to do when afield, more than breeds that are not indigenous.   Particularly when it comes to large wildlife.

So they know what to do when wolves are stalking you?!

I remember hearing about all those dogs getting eaten by wolves up there a couple years back.   Embarrassed

It's called skijoring.  Great fun, we love it and the dog think it is the reason for living.  It's a team sport and my teammate is
the star.

The wolves are getting bold again and have been seen on trails that we skijor with the dogs.  So we may soon see how they react.
What seems to happen is that the dogs are fooled into thinking that the wolves are friendly playmates and are seduced away from their owners to meet their doom.  If we encounter wolves in winter we will have the dogs on a tug line and I won't release them just to see what will happen.  They are bigger than wolves but would be no match for a pack.  I look forward to the potential encounter.

Found these today while rummaging around on my laptop. Two of his favorite things, car rides and playtime!

If we meet wolves, I'll let you all know what happens.  Seeing wolves in the wild is rare even here.  I've only seen them a couple of times.  Seeing them is very exciting.  My dogs aren't fighters at all so I doubt that they would fight the wolves.  They generally ignore aggressive dogs or quickly show dominance and move on.  We never have had a real dog fight.

Introducing Jack, our second cavalier. Black and tan so he's a little different looking to the first one (who is white with brown).
