Thanks guys... I am trying not to be a sympathy hound but man it really helps to have a support structure. After today I have a week scheduled off (as much as I could take). I am making the 5-hour drive to my hometown where my family is to take care of him there. That's where he was born and I got him, so I figure it's fitting that he return there and complete the circle.
Sometimes he is sleeping peacefully and I look at him and think it could go a few more weeks. But when he's awake he's so out of it now and can barely get around - the dog I knew for 13 years is pretty much already gone. So, I know what has to be done. It's the last, ultimate responsibility when you accept stewardship of an animal companion, and a test of sorts I guess. Wish me luck.

You're absolutely right. I hear of too many stories where people prolong the inevitable for selfish reasons. Breaks my heart. My yellow lab was 14 when we reached that point. Never went through anything as difficult but I knew it was the right time. I had the vet come to the house rather than do it at the vet clinic. Didn't want that to be Buddy's last memory. The vet left and I had about 30 minutes or so to be alone with him. Then a funeral director (for pets) came and we put him in a beautiful soft blanket. They then put him on a gurney and rolled him into the van. It was all done so professionally and I'm happy with the way it went. When I got him back after cremation, the canister he was in was butt-ugly and I found that his remains fit perfectly into his treat jar where he is today with a bunch of his hair balls that I eventually had to pick up off the floor. After that day, I couldn't go right home after work for about 3 months because it was so quiet and lonely. I shopped. And shopped and shopped. I was the best dressed that summer but miserable without him. It's what we sign up for with these 4-legged gifts. Five years later (five next month) I'm lucky to share a new one w/Randimus. He's a goof ball (well, they both are) and the timing was right. Big hug to you and Cliff. We'll be thinking about you.

Thanks again everyone, it really helps. There is still some uncertainty, today he is doing a lot better sometimes almost seems normal. he can sleep and inexplicably his appetite is voracious. He still knows to go outside to do his business. It makes me happy but it also make the beast with two backss up my plans this weekend maybe. Damn dog! ( ). So, it's day to day I'm not going to hold out but if he has some more time then so be it.

Thats awesome BP thanks!
he's actually doing really well today... hardly the picture of health but looking at him you wouldn't know he was anything other than old. He even menaced a squirrel in the backyard. I'm not holding my breath but man it felt good to see a little spark in him. they still surprise you sometimes. Earlier this week I was pretty sure it was time but he may have a little more left.
