Perhaps there is a Doberman specific rescue organization?

I bet there is.

Google is magical in finding such things: http://www.hmdd.org/

It's even in Columbus, OH.

Well aware of this organization.

Looked at it before we got Greta.

We decided on the breeder route verse a rescue.

That's just how I buy my dogs.

I think I'm getting ready to have a dog again...  Funny though I really don't know where to even begin... the idea of starting over again with another dog is still weird.

We feel the same way, but are much more recent to losing ours and we still have one with us.

I doubt we will make it to August before Greta gets a friend.............

Wow, did you see that lady on Oprah?  Never ever ever own a chimp or even be around one.  That thing ate her fingers and her ENTIRE FING FACE!!!!!!!!!

Chimps are nice when they are young and violent/aggressive as they get older.

pretty much guaranteed time-bombs from what I have read and seen

which makes me wonder if the late Michael Jackson's chimp had residual "boundary-issues"

The majority of rescue dogs were given up because they were inconvenient and too much work, not because they were abused dogs that can "snap".

Most rescue organizations (as opposed to shelters) have the animals in foster care, living in a home, and usually the foster home can tell you quite a lot about the animal's personality and behavior.  You could also have them evaluated by a professional behaviorist if you were concerned.

Adult dogs are generally less work than puppies, with a few exceptions.

On the other hand...the breeder that bred my Jack Russell Terrier didn't know I was going to buy a dog. She was alive and going to be either homed or homeless. I bought her and gave her a good home. Pure bred dogs need homes too.

I am in that same boat right now.... as it has come time to fill the position.  My last dog I didn't pay a dime for and so now I have this prejudice against paying for a dog - but now I realize I was just really really lucky to be in the right place at the right time when someone needed to give away some puppies.  So I can either wait for that to happen again (who knows when?) or go out and adopt/buy a dog that needs a home now...

I am also mulling over the adopt vs buy issue too.  A few years back I would have said I'd never buy from a breeder but now I'm seriously considering it.

breeder sold the one we had our eye on since this morning at 10am.

They have 4 males left which go in for ear crop next week and since ours will be shipped, we get it sent a week after stitches from said crop are removed.

Breeder sending pictures of the 4 males in a little bit so we can pick our new family member out.

Weird picking based on picture........but when they are six weeks old, it is hard to tell personality anyway, so you essentially are picking off how they look too.

The males that are 8wks are already 23lbs.

This six week litter we are looking at........estimated adult weight is 135-140lbs.

That's a big make the beast with two backsing doberman!
