Litter Plans announced!! I'm very happy as it is has been about ten years since I've owned a dog of my own and I'm getting tired of living with other people's dogs - even if they are awesome,

Belgian Malinois - Mom is an agility expert, has the ability to settle and according to the owner isn't soft. Dad is SCHIII and a serious competitor.

Wow AK, that is such saddening news.  I am incredibly sorry for your loss.

And I commend you for taking the road that you are, and looking at this horrible situation the way you have.  I myself would have had a difficult time maintaining my composure towards the girl.  It's sad, but I have been growing less and less tolerant towards people lately, especially when their actions bring about events such as this.

So sorry to hear about Siku, Bill. I love the look on his face in the photo you posted -- that's a happy dog.

You're doing the right thing with regard to the teen.

In an attempt to lighten the mood........

Our little (ok, not really little anymore) Taggart finally went up the stairs!!!

He had no problem running down the stairs.....but wouldn't go up them.

My wife and I were getting ready to head to the dealer to get our new car, changing, talking, etc.

Greta was up with us and the next thing I know........Tag is in the room!!!!

It's funny.........It took Greta about the same amount of time to go up stairs.

To all the other doberman owners - did you guys experience the same?

Nope.  Darmah was chasing the cats up the stairs at a very early age.   [evil]

Thanks to everyone for the kind words.  The Texas Husky Rescue is coming to our town this weekend and my wife thinks we should go and pick out another husky.  I don't think I am ready for that, but my wife points out that our remaining Husky, Tana, and father of Siku, has never been alone in the Kennel before.  He does seem to be lost.  He doesn't have the energy and intensity that he used to.  We will go and see what the rescue dogs are like.

That is horrible to ak having just lost my pup i know how it feels.  As for getting another dog so early i don't see it as a bad thing especially since your other Husky has never been alone.  And since you would be rescuing a dog that is always a great thing to do.

While emotionally I might not be ready in a situation like this, it may just do the heart good to bring in a rescue....

akmnstr - so sorry about  your loss.
Some people are like Slinkies. They're really good for nothing; however, they can still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

cyrus,

for how long do you need to keep the 'thingy' on the dog's ears?

cyrus,

for how long do you need to keep the 'thingy' on the dog's ears?

Long enough until the dog feels "natural" again after having his ears modified.

Flame away, Cyrus, Flame away.

You keep them taped as long long as they stand on their own without flopping.

He lasted 2 weeks before his right ear flopped.

I just removed the tape after the last posting (you post them with tampon app applicators or whatever the cardboard is called and then popsicle sticks in the middle to brace them together).

He got a show crop so the taping will last a bit longer than a shorter crop, but that is what the breeder's vet does.

No flaming needed. He has never minded any of it.

Does your dog have its tail docked and its declaws removed?

If so, your dog got cosmetic treatment as well.

Carry on.

Other's opinion of the ear crop has no bearing on my life.

My Uncle did cropping for 35yrs as a Vet. Never once did he experience an animal that woke up in pain or caring about the tape job. Personal opinion of how you feel.

Greta was in more pain after getting spayed then anything else; after her ear crop, she was the same as when we brought her in. I wish I could say the same after the 4in incision on her belly.

However, that is socially acceptable.

Don't carry. Won't argue.

Yeah, my dog has had those two procedures you mentioned performed.  Both just days after birth, not weeks later.  There is a very good reason dew claws are removed.  Tail docking is debatable.

I'm not going to get into a virtual argument on the ear cropping.  I'd feel better stabbing myself in my eyes with anything sharp (hopefully rusty).

It's not an AKC requirement any longer.  You're not going to "show" your dog anyways.  You prefer the "look" as you think "that's how they are supposed to look".  What the make the beast with two backs ever.
