Until We moved to Texas and while living in Alaska our micro kennel of huskies worked as skijoring dogs.  There is a pic of me and one of our dogs (Siku) in a skijoring race a few pages back.  Working with my dogs as a team made the bond between us very close.  Now that we are in Texas and have only one husky, his job is to run with us and stay out of trouble.

What pic?

Does anyone on here work their dogs? If so in what discipline?

I'd like to take my 6mon old male Doberman to a K9 instructor to learn protector training.

No, I won't fight the dog or any of that, I just want to utilize the animal for what it was created for: personal protection.

However, not sure I want the liability of having such an animal that knows biting, commands, etc.

Also, the training is quite $$$$ and then my animal becomes more skeptical of house guests, etc.

instead of the gumpy goofy doberman he is.

Re my ear crop before my banning:

I don't like the AKC either on their licensing of breeders.

My point of the excerpt from their website was the breed standard for the Doberman. That's all. There was nothing else to the AKC.

I think it's a shit organization that allows ANYONE to register "AKC Approved" on their BS newspaper classified ads.

I'll post some pictures of the ear taping process this weekend as we are due to change his out again.

Cyrus,  Welcome back.  I have to agree with the negatives about the AKC.  Breeders that practice line breeding in the hopes of getting one good show dog out of the litter without any notion of how genetics really works.  It reduces the gene pool of the breed and reduces their health and vigor.  The standards for breeds can be very damaging.  Just look what has happened to the English Bull dog.  That was a dog that 150 years ago actually worked in the stockyards and in other capacities.  Now the breed barely resembles the working dogs of it's past.  And then there are the dog shows... I better stop here.  I could continue to rant on and on but I've got to get back to work.

Cyrus,  I almost forgot that I had something else to add, before I leave and become productive for the afternoon.  The idea of training you dobby to be a personal protection dog sounds scary to me.  What if he goes off for the wrong reason.  Dogs are like people in that they make mistakes.  And why do you need a pp dog?  Don't you have a closet full of guns?  I mean if some MF comes after you just shoot his ass.  Don't take offense, but your sounding slightly paranoid.

I think my post came across as I was an AKC supporter and I don't want that impression of me given.

They can burn for all I care...........but I do have both the pedigree's of my dogs.

My little boys pedigree is actually pretty damn cool since his Dad came from Yugoslavia (when it existed)

I agree, no more AKC talk.

Let's spoil our little guys.

I'll PM you in a bit to see how you are doing.

That is the primary reason why I am not going to do it.

I just wanted to train the dog for what it was bred for, you know?

It wasn't really a paranoia thing..........more of a hobby of working and better understanding my animal outside of standard obedience...........but I don't think the risk is worth the reward as you are right........what if it does snap?

It was one of my many ideas that run through my head that come out and when I think and analyze it, it gets nixed.

There is always lure coursing and agility, which are fun for dog and owner.
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

I have actually thought about that, but are 110-120lbs Doberman's "designed" for that?

I just worry about hip issues later in life.

The dobe can't do lure coursing (competitions only allow sighthounds) but agility should be fine.  If you wanted to try it I would look for an instructor that competes in NADAC rather than USDAA and AKC agility.  NADAC is much more conscientious of safety concerns for the dogs (including things that would affect hips and knees), and an instructor that competes in NADAC will also be more aware of it.  Avoid classes from instructors that don't (or haven't) competed, they are least likely to understand safety concerns.

And you don't ever have to get to competition level...you can have a ton of fun with your dobe doing straight tunnels and 4" jumps.  It really is a lot of fun for both owner and dog, to me when it all came together it felt like we were dancing. ;D

You know that phil collins song "I can't dance"?

that is me!!! hahaha

(thank you for all the info, I am going to look into a local trainer that has the credentials you mentioned above. That might be funny to see that goofy little dog try to do it!!! I wonder how Greta would do at it. She can run like the wind!)
