All the dogs I've ever had spend their day rooting through garbage, rolling in shit or the smelliest thing they can find, and drinking out of the toilet.

I don't think they really mind the dirt.

When the whippets were younger I avoided all-dirt dog parks as they would rip the pads off their feet taking hard corners.

About a month ago I asked for advice here on how to train a shy dog.  Based on the positive replies and the advice
of a professional trainer we adopted the shy Husky.  Her original name was sissy but we felt she needed a name that
would inspire courage so we renamed her Xena.  She has accepted my wife but I believe that she thinks I'm a puppy killer.
I'm sure it is just a matter of time until she approaches me.  Here is a video or her at play with or older dog, Tana, our last
McKenzie River Husky.

Haha..avatar..Puppy killer!  [cheeky]

Cool dogs.  I love when they howl.  Reminds me of my old hounds.  Unfortunately, neighbors don't tend to appreciate it..especially in town.   :P  Doesn't look like you all have to worry about that AK.

What happened to the other McKenzies?  I thought you had 3?

BTW..hope the wife is doing well!   [thumbsup]

Its us owners that mind the dirt. Trip to grass covered park usually requires no bath. Same with wood chips. Trip to beach requires bath but it's so much fun for the dog I don't mind. Other then on a hike, I've never had to take my dog to a dirt lot to play. Luckily our City is known for being dog friendly.

The howling used to bother me when we lived in Alaska and the kennel was next to the bedroom.  The howling might happen at 3 AM but now they are further from the house and I am appreciating it for it's melodic form.  Xena is learning to howl from Tana and in general picking up how to be a husky.  Sadly, we did have 3 McKenzies.  We left the oldest, Kipmik, in Alaska. I was sure he wouldn't survive in Texas and he is living with several of his own kind, enjoying his golden years.  We lost Siku while on a trip.  I told the story here:

Thanks for asking about my wife.  This is breast cancer awareness month and she is celebrating by continuing
to be cancer free and healthy.

Cute boy. [thumbsup]

Maybe someone can get some grass or wood chips donated so the dogs don't have to play in a dirt lot.

It's actually more of a beach sand surface than "dirt".

Also, it is only an interim park, hopefully moving to a nearby city park when the city obtains funding for a recreation center on the property, as that was the main intention.

Cool. Possible tip: when our dog park was built we had all the fencing donated (installed) by allowing the fence company to install signs on the fencing stating such. Good advertising for them, free fencing for the puppies.

All of the parks here are city owned, although a few of the newer ones have been funded by private donations and deeded to the city.  I'll pass along the suggestion.

The main dog park here is also City owned but once they agreed to the section being used as a dog park they were happy to let someone else pay for the fencing. They split it into two sides so the small dogs don't have to war with the big pooches unless they want to. Getting the City to donate a section ( a few acres) of a large park (in this case over 350 acres) is much easier then getting a dedicated park built.

The dog beach consists of over a mile of City owned coastline that they allow dogs to run off leash. All the clean up, maintenance, new bathroom, dog faucets, etc are paid for by private donations.

The city here pays for everthing by charging people either an excessive amount to park at the beach or a $45 pass for parking the whole year.

Well, Brian's birthday started out well enough.  Breakfast, new harness, hike in the woods over rolling hills, nothing too strenuous (by Rocky Mountain standards).

Nearly done with the hike and he went lame on both front feet.  Thought maybe he had gotten a pricker in a pad but he alternated between licking the right pastern (which he's done before very randomly) and the left pad (first occurrence).  Good thing Randimus was along on this one because even after cleaning and inspecting, Brian would not walk so he had to be carried back to the car.

Was going to soak his feet in epsom salt/warm water but after he rested for a few hours, he was fine.  Going to have his doc check him out though tomorrow.
