She is afraid of fireworks and storms but she actually likes to go on walks when these things are happening.  Usually if she hears thunder she goes and gets her leash.

I don't think it is a neighbor.  We have none on one side (just moved out), older people along the backyard and the we know the neighbor on the other side.  I'm thinking about going around and asking if anyone saw anything.

I think it is just a bee sting or someting like that. She just seems so anxious when she is outside now.  It's really bumming me out because her favorite thing is being outside.

Wow, I'd be bummed too!

Have you tried sitting outside with treats and letting her come to you on her own?  (Then giving her the treats of course.)  Maybe she needs her confidence built back up after whatever incident shook her....

Good luck!  Keep us posted!

What kind of dog is it?

IT would be interesting to know if she will take the treats - if she does eat the treats then her stress level is not that high. I would make sure that her favorite things happen ONLY outside.

If she has high drives for a ball or tug then try to engage her drive near the door and work your way outside. Monitor her stress and make sure she is not going to let go which if she does take a step away from the door and start to move closer again.

We actually just did the DNA test and found out she is about half Mexican Red Wolf and half German Sheperd.  She's nine so no problems with confidence, etc.

She is finally getting a little better.  Will go out for walks no problem and is now going in the backyard late at night and will stay/nap on the deck like usual. Still problems with getting her to play in the backyard which is her favorite thing in the whole world.  Treats and toys won't work and they do make her more anxious.  At this point we are walking her a lot and just letting her do her own thing.  If she's not getting better by next week we'll go from there. I think us making a big deal out of it is making her nervous, so we are going to let her do her own thing for a couple of days.

I think we have it figured out that it is most likely the Cicadas that are bothering her.  She seems to get more nervous in the evening when they are screaming.

I'll keep everyone posted and let you know what happens.

That makes sense. My Dane is bothered by any loud or out of the ordinary noise. The smoke alarms beeping for a new battery scare the crap out of her, as does the low water warning beep for my sump pump battery. Unfortunately, both always seem to go off at 2-3 AM...and she makes sure I deal with the problem asap!  [laugh]

Good luck with your pup.  [thumbsup]

Well a week and a lot of work later and she's back to about 90% normal.  She's back to being outside all the time but still won't go towards the back of the back yard.  I'm sure that is where it happened.  We just took our time and used everyone's adivce.  Treats, praise, and play.  Seemed like once she figured out it was okay she was cool.

I love having a really really smart dog but sometimes she is such a freaking headcase!

I'll get a pic of her in the yard to thank everyone.

Uh.  Why must dogs eat bees?    [bang]

Why must dogs eat bees on weekends when vet visits are 2x what they are during the week.

Thanks goodness for benedryl but still not 100% that we won't be making that trip to the docs.

Methinks he'll be okay

Here was My boy Deuce.  He passed away earlier this year due to a bladder tumor. That was one of the hardest days of my life. This picture was the first time he ever saw the ocean.  We took both of our dogs to Hilton Head a few summers back.

Below him is Katie Jo.  She's our little Westie.

Great pics of beautiful dogs!  So sorry to hear that you lost Deuce.  Quite a few of us know what you've been through.  I'm sure he had a wonderful life with you.  Keep the pics of Katie Jo coming!  Adorable!!!    [thumbsup]

aww super cute!! i have 3 big dogs who are all between 10 & 12 years old.. I never want them to leave me, but when they do pass i plan on getting a scottie & a westie. they just seem like they have the best personalities & smaller dogs are easier to travel with. loading up a 60 pounder & two 80 pounders are no easy task :)

Meet Charlie & Tutu, a Jack Russell terrier mix and Maltipoo, respectively.

When I am not riding around on the 1100s (and scaring the bejeezes out of these two rascals in the morning on startup, damn Termis) they accompany me around the house and rough each other up for play. Charlie is the youngest and biggest rascal at just about a year old and Tutu is almost 9, the grumpy old man. Both are celebrating their birthdays later this month. Say hello to my lil' friends!

Here's some more of Deuce and Katie...

We used to take them both  to the local park and run around on the baseball field.  Deuce loved Soccer balls or any ball really(he'd have 3000 holes in it and it would be deflated in about 10 minutes), Katie not so much.  For her we always play a game called "Attention".  Me and my wife will get about 30-40 feet apart and take turns calling Katie over.  Once she gets there we just give her a ton of attention or petting and praise.

And here's two more random ones.  Deuce with guess what... another ball and Katie on a bad hair day.
