I have a 2004 Monster 620, and it is close to 6K on the clock. I stopped in dealership today and ask for what's included in the 6K service and how much. Here is the list:

Items to replace: oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter
Items to check and adjust: timing belt, valve clearance, clutch and hyraulic control; and general testing

Total cost with parts and labor is $690!!! Does it sounds right? Really, it never sounds right to me for that amount of $ . It is like 1/10 of the cost of the bike, and it costs more than my Infiniti G35's 60K service. WTF???  :bang

Can anyone give me some suggestion where to go beside the 'official dealership shop'? I am located in San Francisco East bay area - Thanks in advance!

Mine was about $550, but they also did a valve seat replacement under warranty at the time.

There is also a lot of bolt checking and torquing done as the vibes tend to loosen things up.

At 6k does it even need an air filter?

No, but being an '04 it should get belts if they haven't been done yet.

The dealer quoted me "about 600 bux."  These bikes, much like an Italian supermodel, are not cheap to upkeep.

I have a very good indy Ducati mechanic.  I got the 6k service AND a new clutch slave cylinder installed, parts AND labor around $500.

Valve clearance wise, all my openers were in spec, but all my closer shims needed adjustment.  Go figure.

With a dealership there is probably a lot of overhead they have to make up for in the cost.

I kind of worry what they will charge for it down here in Hawaii, but I still have about 1500 miles to find out first.  ;)

Fortunately, you are close to an excellent shop, Nichols.

I paid $500 for service last Saturday (and wrecked it 5 days later).  That included belts, oil, hydraulic cluth flush, brake flush, ECU dialed in, etc.  Gotta pay to play.

Here's a good reference for what a proper service at a quality shop should cost:

Belts cost extra, but you only pay parts cost, since they take the old belts off anyway to check the cams and rocker arms.

A 2-valve Monster service without new belts should be around $300.

+11tyb  I only take my bike to Nichols [thumbsup]

There are other good shops in the bay area, but I'm loyal to good service.

another guy here who'll always give [thumbsup] [thumbsup] for Nichols.  I've had three 6-k services done there...it's the only place I'll take my bike.  they charged ~$325-$350 for the service on my old 2-valve, and ~ $400 for the 4-valve.

WOW! These prices seem pretty good compared to what the dealer quoted me. I live in the south west corner of CT and the local dealer said it would cost $1000 for the 6k service with belt change.

Wait! Wait! here is the best part. That included only checking the valves if they actually needed to be adjusted it was going to be more money. I'm going to attempt to do the work myself. Wish me luck.
