most if not all the rear shocks i see are yellow. i have a 06' 620 monster, is there any way to change the current shock from yellow to black? or are there upgraded colored ones out there that would fit my bike? any info on the subject would be appreciated.

Hey... what's wrong with yellow?!
Try Werke's Performance or Penske, I think their springs are blue or black. You could take yours off and paint it as some others have done. I put a 749 shock on my 620. I may have my stocker around here somewhere for experimentation.

thanks, i'll check out the two you suggested. any "special" paint or just some black spray paint? how does paint hold up? i'd think it would crack and chip off
p.s. hahaha yellow is nice if it's something like the bike in your pic. but since my bike is black, and i'm trying to make it as black as can be, the lone yellow piece has to go (no offense to yellow).
p.p.s no i'm not putting one of those ugly black "socks" on it like in another thread on here.

i thought the color was an indication of the rating of the spring. my old fiat had it that way. yellow was sort of standard, red and upgrade. would be cool if they had red.
and i think you would want to go with a shop that can strip it and then powdercoat it.

You can have any colour you want, powder coating is the preferred choice. You will have to take the spring off of the shock, unless you have the proper spring compressor, do NOT attempt to do this at home, take it to a dealer.
The colour of a spring is not an indicator of it's rating, altho Girling used a combination of three colours dabed on the spring for identification purposes.

you dont need a spring compressor, just loosen the collars all the way and the bottom perch will come slip off. of course you want to measure how many threads you have showing so later on you can set your preload the same.
to the original question, yea u could paint it, or powdercoat it, the latter will last longer. or change it out for a different spring, maybe one that will suit your weight better as the stock ones pretty soft. new springs are less than 100$

Really, I have this shock on my desk right now, it has a free spring length of 200mm, its fitted length is 172mm, the spring rate is 640lbs/inch, with the preload collar wound all the way, I got to compress the spring by 20mm i.e. 600lbs is required to do that.

so it is possible to powdercoat.......won't the powdercoating crack when the spring is compressed? have you done this before, or anyone on here change the color and have pics?

Powdercoating won't crack off.
Paint is fine, a decent quality rattle-can like Krylon or RustOleum works great.
Scuff it up with 320, clean it, and paint it.
If you run without a rear fender, likely the paint will get grit-blasted off.
You won't get the spring off of a 620 shock without a compressor.
If you're heavier than 150# or so, it's a good time to get a proper spring.

thanks, so what your telling me is (not that i'm sure i'll do it like this but..) that i could just ductape everything except the yellow part and just spray paint it right? cause i don't know what a compressor is let alone how to use it hahahha. my bike is in winter storage right now so i can't really inspect it at the moment, that being said, is the current yellow part on the shock powdercoated yellow?
p.s. i am about 150 and do plan on keeping the fender on

I suspect that the stock spring is powdercoated yellow.
You would need to remove the spring from the shock to paint it.
IMO, at 150# you're OK with the stock spring.
