Question for the Flounders....

I'm not sure if i should post this here or so please feel free to move it to the appropriate section if not.

I'm not trying to be a pain or cause problems, I'm just curious.

Why do we not have image hosting like on TOB? It seems like there are a lot of times where people would have posted images if we did. The example I would suggest is the classified section. There are quite a few items for sale where the sellers offer to email pics to anyone interested rather than just post them in the thread. I for one think it's quite a PITA to upload images onto a hosting site and then link to them in the thread. There are times when I don't even bother to reply to a thread when a pic is necessary because it's to much of a PITA.

Is it a monetary thing? While I'm on that subject, why no upgraded memberships like the titanium one's we had on the TOB? Wouldn't that insure that there was more operating capital?

if i remember, its more about bandwidth.
hosting all the pictures takes up a whole lot of space.

i think the flounders decided that it was not worth the hassle.

on the other hand, WTFDIK?

It sucks up a *lot* of bandwidth, and from what I understand, is one of the reasons TOB became difficult to run, both speedwise, and monetarily.

I'm not a Flounder, but I can tell you that those images eat up both bandwidth and just HD space very quickly.  Then we'd have to go through and pare them down at a certain point and really it's just a PITA that we don't need.  We have enough of those with Tiny Portal ;)

Anyhow, if someone can upload an attachment to a forum, they can just as easily upload it to photobucket.  If they can't figure that out, then they need to enroll in interwebs U.

somegirl

I even made a FAQ and all. ;)

Anyway, I think the inline (externally-hosted) pictures look much nicer in the posts than attachments you would have to click on to see properly.

It's not about figuring out how. Thats easy. The thing I was trying to convey was that if you viewing a post and you want to respond and add a pic it's a PITA. You have to go to photobucket, upload the pic you want to post, then jump through all the hoops they want you to do like adding tags ect., and then copy the link and go back and post it in the thread.

I'm not saying it's not worth it but sometimes it 's too much of a hassle. Like a mentioned in the original post, I'm not trying to cause problems I was simply asking a question.

The resulting replys have satisfied my curiosity. It is as I thought anyway. I only thought if it because I've noticed some posts in the classified section where the seller has offered to email pics rather than just posting them.

Thanks for the replys!

Drunken Monkey

As a flounder, there were three reasons.

Bandwidth.
Hard-disk space.
Bandwidth.

If all the DMF has to do is serve up text in posts the costs are significantly lower. Because, yes, a picture really is worth 1000 words.

Plus, on TOB they'd have to go through and scrub the attachments periodically to save room, which left a lot of threads with the annoying "attachment deleted by admin" text, instead of the photo showing you the proper way to remove your flux capacitor from your muffler bearings.

Now, with people relying on 3rd parties to handle images, they can stick around a lot longer. Indefinitely even.

That's not to say we aren't looking into ways to making posting images easier. There's been talk of using some plug-ins that'll make it easier to integrate into image hosting sites. Maybe it's worth looking at again...

I think we ought to just host all our pics at the DML. Problem solved.  :)

cupcakes? :)  [laugh]

it's not that difficult mash, and you can skip the image tagging and naming step in photobucket uploads  ;)

i think linking to pictures hosted somewhere else is a WaY better solution, the old "photo deleted by admin" was annoying on TOB.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

FTR...the very first thing we decided when we entered into this was there would be no image hosting.

It truly was the biggest issue on TOB.

edit
The second thing we decided was we didn't want to own a server.

I think he saying he can't view the pics hosted at photobucket therefore reducing his goofing off experience.

As worthy a suit as most. [thumbsup]
