job interview process question

Had a third job interview with a good company 9 days ago.  Hiring manager said they would make a decision by end of last week.  Haven't heard anything.

Questions.  Should I send an email or call the guy to express my continued interest?  Or does this make me sound desperate?

Does not sound desperate, just motivated. Don't be afraid to contact then at all. My friend got a great job that way. The hiring manager was slow to fill the position and he was persistent and kept calling. They hired him for his persistence.(and qualification)      Good luck!

I think some follow-up contact is fine...just make sure to thank them for their time.

Calling them every day for a couple of weeks, on the other hand, would not be appreciated.

I would call.

And I would probably say something along the lines of; I am weighing a few offers now and I am really excited about the opportunity at (what ever the company is) wanted to include you in my decision but I haven't heard back yet.... bla bla bla

If you call, and it sounds like it may not work out, it's a perfect chance to see if the hiring manager needs his/her lawn mowed. Gotta look at the positive side.

You won't sound desperate.  Calling can only help your chances if you are worried that he is debating between more than one candidate.  Managers want to know that you want the job. 
He missed his own deadline, so there is absolutely nothing wrong with calling to find out what's happening.  I would strongly advise against saying "you are a few days late calling me back"- keep it casual but express your eagerness to join the team etc

No word yet.  But I did hear from a recruiter about 3 other opportunities that I may be interested in.  Hopefully the first job will pan out b/c I don't want to go through the interview process again and wait and have the bills pile up.  It might be a frugal Christmas this year.
