to avoid problems like this, have your checks printed and get "VALID FOR 90 DAYS FROM DATE ISSUED" printed above the signature line.

i had the same problem as the OP about 6 years ago.  helpful lady at the bank said i could get it printed and i did.

turns out the bank is happy to reverse the check when they see you've put that on your check.  it's a payable note but all notes have implicit and explicit rules.

90 days is the minimum i think a bank will go along with.  you have to put a reasonable amount of time for the recipient to cash plus some.  i asked if i could put 7 days and she just snorted at me....

i've had to use it 3-4 times.  amazing how it seems stuff gets cashed faster now...

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

I might have to do this. I would rather just not write checks at all, but I guess the world isn't quite to that point yet.

I'm going to go up there today and see if they'll reverse some of the charges.

Like I said, it was my fault...but $245 in charges is a little nuts

Be aware though that this WILL NOT INVALIDATE YOUR DEBT.

It just means that you will have to issue a new check, or pay in another way.

You might try calling whomever cashed the check.  Tell them you incurred fees from their refusal to cash it in a timely manner.  It's not the bank's fault.  kinda sucks they gotta take it on the chin.  It's the person who cashed it a year and a half later.

+1 to the suggestion that you go in person.  Them seeing you and hearing your good faith efforts will go a lot longer than trying to get anywhere on a phone.

Good luck!

oh, of course.  but it puts the onus on them if they decide to cash the check after 90 days so you don't get hit by your bank.

Keeping a register of your account transactions and balance separate of BOA's online banking would go a long way towards preventing that kind of thing happening.

sooo....

update: I went up to the local branch this afternoon. They dropped 2 of the charges. I guess I can't ask more than that for something that they didn't do.

as much as I hate BoA, and will be opening an account somewhere else in the future, I also opend a savings account and tossed a couple hundred in it. This way, if something like this ever happens again, they will just pull the money out of there instead of overdrafting me.

Still almost a couple hundred in the hole after this....and I'm still pissed at the city (DAMN YOU WICHITA FALLS!!!!).

Another option is to use the online banking to send a check to someone instead of hand-writing it the old-fashioned way.
