It's Hammer Time....

The race to become the lazyest "craftsman" just got a lot closer:

Craftsman Electric Hammer:

Here's what Toolmonger.com had to say about it:

"Craftsman's Nextec 12V Hammerhead Auto-Hammer has been a long time coming.  Other companies have rolled out some hokey auto-hammer designs over the years, but this one comes in a form factor that might actually work.

Think of it like a handheld jackhammer and you start to get the point.  A piston inside a sleeve travels a small distance at great speed to drive the nail home.  So instead of one or two giant swings for a standard 3-1/2” nail, the auto-hammer sinks it with around 34 small strikes per second.

We're curious to see how many nails per charge this gets.  But we can see one advantage right off the bat: For tight spaces, where the standard set and swing method is next to impossible, you can cram the Hammerhead in there with the nail magnetically attached to the piston.

Though experienced pros might not feel comfortable hanging up the trusty 24oz framing hammer, the Hammerhead does at least sound interesting.  Pricing is set at about $100, which is about what you'd expect for a 12V Li-Ion setup like this."

Good idea or bad?

We've had 'palm nailers' for years, although they are pneumatic.  This idea seems dumb, and a waste of money.  Buy a frickin' hammer, man (not you, Dave).  This won't replace the standard framing hammer.  This is a 'Johnny Homeowner' gimmick...have at it.

Thanks for that!  [thumbsup]

I'm still using (and love) the tools that my grandfather gave me from his days as an engineer working on the SR71 and the space shuttle.

Your Grandfather used a 24-oz framing hammer on the Space Shuttle?  Damn, bro.  [laugh]

Probably won't drive finish nails as well as an air-nailer.

Now that I'm thinking of this thing, I'm convinced it was designed by a woman.  Probably a woman who's husband likes doing handy shit around the house.  Look, guys, this POS hammer thing is the number one gadget that will PREVENT you from getting other new tools and gadgets.  What's the first thing you do, when you've got a new project?  BAM! Buy some new tools.  Gotta hang some trim?  Damn, need a new pancake compressor and a finish nailer.  Building a deck?  WABBO!  Need a nailgun that shoots 16's.  This thing isn't meant to LIBERATE you, it's meant to ENSLAVE you!  Fight the motherf'ing power!

Bun-bun

I can see some situations where this thing would be useful.
It's a specialty tool. One of those things that you reach for when nothing else will quite do the job, like a 90 degree angled power screwgun for nails.
That said, I'll pass. Between the 90 degree angle screwgun, and the palm nailer, I think I could do anything that thing would do.
