Author Topic: I haz a Skin Cancer.  (Read 1930 times)

Over the last six months, I developed a lump on the top of my left hand that would not go away. It was about the size of a thumb tac, was scaley & a bit sore when I squeezed it.

I decided to go to the quack and get him to check it out, as no amount of picking at it  Grin would make the basta*d go away!

He told me to come back the next week and get it cut off as freezing it would have frozen half my hand off.

Went back the next week and got it cut off, local anesthetic and a blunt scalpel  Angry, felt like he was sawing through a cypress pine, and off it came and into a jar for a biopsy, couple of stitches and come back in two weeks to get the stitches out.

Went back on Wednesday, got my stitches out and he told me the growth was cancerous.  Shocked

But, he told me there was nothing to worry about as he got it pretty early and it was of a type that didn't spread, I can't remember what type as he is Vietnamese and understanding him is a bit hard at times. It's gotta be either a basal or squamous cell carcinoma, I can't remember which one it was.  Huh?

Now I have to go back every three months & get checked out.

I probably developed this thing driving a car as I rest my left hand on the steering wheel, directly under the windscreen.  Angry

The moral of this story is, if you drive a car, you will get skin cancer. Ride a bike, wear your gloves and you won't get skin cancer!  waytogo

But seriously, get yourself checked out. I have worked outdoors most of my working life and didn't bother wearing sunscreen, I was flat out wearing a shirt! Now I'm near covered head to toe, LS shirt, hat, long pants, sunscreen.

I'd rather look like a dick wearing all the gear than be a good looking corpse.  Wink

Totally agree Super re looking after yourself and get "lumps" checked out (both above and below the shoulders)........

I have had 2 lumps removed over the years but luckily both were benign..........  waytogo

It's never good to have that news and being generally stubborn blokes we don't often go to see the Doc.
Happy you got the right news after you visits.

What'd you say about my Momma?

Ive been thinking about getting the head to toe, explore every nook and cranny check up. Decided its going to take a female doctor to get this done.  Unfortunately, the only one in my area that participates with my insurance is named Dr Barbarian.....aye aye aye. Grin

Dermatologist gives me a full go over every year and as I'm over 40, doc insists on a PSA (prostate specific antigen)  check, so far have only had to have that examination  Shocked  once asthe blood test  came back a high reading, but better to be safe than sorry, have got very anal about my health in my later years.
Had a few cancers burnt off last year, no biggy and better to get em early before they have to use the knife.

As you get a bit longer in the tooth (The docs quote, he's a smartarse Grin ) the Prostate thing gets more of a mention and after much nagging from missus and him I got mine done. I s'pose a lot of the publicity helped too.  Wink

But a bloke at work who aint that old copped a lump in the neck which turned out to be the "BIG C" and the smokes were blamed for it and he was pretty crook for a while with the operation/s, radiation and chemo. Sad

That really brought it home when a great bloke that you know with a young family who is fit and never gets sick gets laid low both physically and mentally.

So as well as the covering up, get off the smokes !! Particularly if you have a family history of any cancers.  Shocked

GET REGULAR CHECKS YOU PRICKS !!!

I'd like to see your postings on here for years to come !! [moto] waytogo

Seriously! My mom always wears sunscreen on her hands when she drives, and I suppose that's actually a good idea...

C'mon dragon, I put a nice pun in there for you and you didn't even comment  Grin

But seriously folks, I seem to be getting to an age where a lot of my mates seem to be developing nasty stuff, some possibly avoidable and other's not , just lost a good friend to breast cancer, her hubby has cancer of the oesophagus, other mates have gone to lung and testicular cancer, but there's been enough incentive over the years to look after my health.

Yeah, just knowing she has to maybe push something out of the way makes the whole ordeal worthwhile... Evil
