Seriously?

They actually have the worst power to weight ratio of the three (four if you include xTerra).

And sit just above H3 for worst fuel economy of the four.

And have the least towing capacity.

Seriously.

Did you buy a Ducati for the power to weight ratio, the fuel economy and carrying capacity?

Coolness costs man. 8)

to each his own.

But, Cyrus still has not given us his intentions, so we're all still guessing at this point.  ;)

My intentions are just wanting to own an SUV for the 4wd aspect, towing, and some additional space.

I think I am going to go with a 2006 Jeep Liberty turbo diesel.

herm,

I completely agree with you.

However, finding one in that condition for a price less than what you can get an FJ Cruiser for (which has more space and better fuel economy) is virtually impossible.

yeh, they are not exactly practical, but thats not the point (for me)
my first set of wheels was a 1970 fj40............i miss it.
i will have another one some day [thumbsup]

Only thing I would worry about is repair costs. Since they no longer make the diesel version, my friend in the parts dept at the largest Chrysler dealer in the area says the parts have sky rocketed.
I wanted one as well...also wanted a Toureg V10 Turbo Diesel. But then I worked on the shakers for a long time in the Army and am biased towrds black clouds of exhaust. Wel that and my friend's 1100 ft lbs of torque from his Cummins Dodge...

My sister has one.

It has been a mess:
-Won't idle in the winter (mind you, it doesn't get THAT cold in GA)
-Has had the idler pully replaced 3 times.
-Shuts off randomly while trying to start from a stop and turn at the same time.

I think we are kind of looking for something the same as you.

The wife says she HAS to have a suv, so I said if we get one it has to have 4wd/awd and be able to tow stuff

the short list:

jeep comander
VW toureg
Nissan Xterra
Honda Pilot (not very useful off-road, but the wifey likes it and it has AWD)
neighbor has a X5 he wants to get rid of, for a decent price

was on the list  but booted:

Jeep liberty (I liked them until my parents bought one...it is LITERALLY falling apart in the driveway)...isn't diesel though
diesel grand cherokee (found out that was a one year deal I guess?)
FJ (no back doors)
yota 4 runner

LP ~ I've heard really good things about the Xterra too.  Nice power (265hp?), decent 4x4 system.

Xterras rock.  [thumbsup] I have an '04 with ~65,000 miles. No problems AT ALL. It also has real 4WD, not some push button electronic system with no low gear and no shift lever.

My only complaint is it gets bad mileage (~14-15 mpg city...~19-20 hwy). It's the older version with the smaller engine (170 hp 6 cyl). Could use more power on the freeway for passing, but I don't mind really...it's a truck not a sports car.

I have a 2006 xterra, and so far, so good.  A few little cosmetic and trim problems, but the engine and drive train are solid and nice.  I can get 20mpg in the summer, and 15mpg in the winter.

I also tow a 2500lb boat, and do some mild off roading with it, and it handles no problem.

Ouch, thats only a few MPGs better than my wifes Escalade ESV!!

It'll haul 7 people comfortably with full luggage in the rear and your Monster on the trailer hitch!  Love the load leveling suspension!  Best part is its Pimp as a Muhmake the beast with two backser!  Get an Eskie!

Great resource when interchange parts can be had...hehe. A vast majority of the post-transmission drive train parts are the same as are body/interior components. It's the wire loom, engine and trans parts that start to become questionable. Had my brother's friend run a search for a few engine and transmission parts through his salvage yard network and he came up with 1 Liberty Diesel in the 1700+ salvage yards on the network. Just something to consider.

After some research through a relative in the auto industry.......

Liberty diesel made one year..........

Chrysler ended up buying a shit ton of them back for various reasons.

Bottom line: they appear to be shit

They are going for 9-10g at the whole sale car auctions
