Parallel Parking & Ducati Tank Dings Update:

On Friday the 28th I rode to the hardware store to get a box of deck screws. While I was in there trying to find 3 1/2" Philips head screws & not the square head ones, the announcement came over the store PA. "will the owner of a green motorcycle come to the front checkout" I knew at that instant what had probably happened. So I go outside, and there it is, on its side, lying down, taking a nap in a puddle of it's own gas & oil.  The lady gave her insurance & info to me, so now I have to get an estimate.

I heard tanks are expensive.
I heard rearsets are expensive.
I also heard custom paint is expensive.

Anyone have experience with this routine?

SO SO SO sorry to see this.
A new tank is about $1500 dollar from ducati.
As far as custom paint goes  I don't know, and the rear set could probally be gotten pretty cheap used.

It is specifically against the law for any insurance company to choose who repairs your bike. They may suggest. You can take it anywhere you want to get an estimate.
This little detail will largely determine what kind of experience you have next.
You will either get it fixed perfect, and have enough to do so. Or you might get a check that doesn't quite cover a sh*t job of fixing with glue and putty.
The idea is, get an estimate for replacing all parts and having them installed + rental fees for time in the shop etc. These are your actual costs. They should pay for that.

Sometimes your ins. company will cut you a check for this and then they will go after the other ins, company. This way you will get it done right away instead of having to haggle for months with the other's company who has to pay.  Let me tell you, that can be a major pain in the arse. Unfortunately I know this one. This is pretty cut and dry though. It's only going to come down to $ amount prolly.

Good job getting their info   hellofalot better than finding your bike wheels up and no one there.

I had my previous Ducati M620 knocked over twice. The first time by an idiot who had literally 10' of space between his rear bumper and the right side of my bike. It was right in front of my face in front of my bar. The best I could come up with is that he was drunk (though not a patron at my bar) as I watched him enthusiatically gass it in reverse and hit my bike, even though he coulda just pulled outta the space     I ran half a block yelling after that PT Cruiser, but of course it was no use. The second time it was an SFPD car flipping a b$tch to make room for an ambulance rushing to a house in front of where my bike happened to be parked. I can't tell you how confused I was when I found the police report on my seat. Initially, I thought it was a good citizen who reported my bike being knocked over... did I get a laugh when I found out it was a  reporting himself.

In both cases, I filed a report with my insurance right away. McGraw was my carrier at the time and they worked quickly to get me a check. In the first hit and run, my damages were assesed by an their adjuster, then my shop, and a check was written for the everything (almost $4k) within a few months. I fixed everything except for the dent in the tank, since I knew it would happen again anyway, and I spent the money on some Renus High mount Tit exhaust. When a SF police hit my bike the second time, there was hardly any delay whatsoever. I had to get a damage assessment from two different dealers, no adjuster this time, and they took the lower estimate which had only a small difference in cost. I kept the money and still didn't fix the tank...it was the same damn dent. Living in SF, I found the dent livable.

So, I'm guessing they're gonna want estimates soon. And perhaps they'll send out an adjuster? Since the woman who hit you is taking responsibility  then at least you don't have to go through you comp/hit-and-run insurance. Tanks are really expensive, but instead of getting a new tank you might be able to get the dent fixed. Your dealer should add everything that looks scratched, even if the tiniest bit, to the parts list. I'd recommend Munroe's or Desmotosport because they were very thorough getting the damages assessed. It's painful to see your bike on it's side and all messed up like that. Sorry that happened. Getting your bike to exactly the way it was before it got knocked is what her insurance should cover and no less. The dealer should put a new tank on the list, but be careful the insurance company might try to hustle to get the tank "fixed" since it's cheaper.

Sounds OK. I have to get an estimate, then have the adjuster come by. I'm taking it to a new shop in Pt Arena called the "Zen House" The owner is a duc mechanic from a shop in San Diego. So I plan on getting list price for all the parts. So far it looks like a

Tank
CRG Lane splitter
Handel Bar
Grips
Clutch lever
Left side rear set.
& some stainless slip ons

Its possible that the LH Turn signal / Horn Controll is damaged as well.

I plan On pulling the dent myself, and I already have the paint, but it's a lot of time consuming work, and the paint/thinner is hard on my hands.
I just need a little help from a freind of mine with the dent pulling. He has a little gas welder that will be needed to braze a bolt on to the outside of the tank where the dent is. Thats the way it was done last time...Nothing like welding on a Gas tank & wondering if all the fumes are purged...


I was just going to sell this bike too. But then this happened. If they pay me cash, I won't have to sell it. I should know something by late next week.... I hope.

I have seen that shop out of the corner of me eye as we are headin out after grubbin' at Carlini's. Might have to walk down at have a look next time. Any goodies in there or repairs only?

I wish, I'm not that cool  No, this was on my tues shift at Bigfoot Lodge on Polk. I no longer work there, but did for years. That's where I met DW13 and got inflicted with this whole Ducati thing. I worked alone on tues so I was manager, owner, sheriff, and barwench all in one night -hahaha.
