Saw this posted in another forum.  I have not confirmed it but those potentially affected might like to check it out.

Ducati 1098-1098S-1098 Tricolore-1098R-848 Recall
December 10th, 2008 at 8:45 am by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider"

Ducati has issued a recall for Ducati 1098 and 848 models for a charging system problem. Please read below for the specific models and details.

Manufacturer: Ducati
Models affected:
2007-2008 Ducati 1098
I saw this from another forum.

2007-2008 Ducati 1098 Tricolore
2008-2009 Ducati 1098R
2007-2008 Ducati 1098S
2008-2009 Ducati 848
NHTSA Campaign Number: 08V638000
Potential Units Affected: 7130
Problem: Ducati is recalling 7,130 model year 2007-2008 1098, 1098S, 1098 Tricolore, 1098R, and model year 2008-2009 848 motorcycles. The motorcycle charging system may be adversely affected by engine heat and stop operating. This results in damage to the voltage regulator and ensuing battery discharge. This can result in damage to the motorcycle and a potential hazard to the rider, increasing the risk of a crash.

Corrective Action: Dealers will replace the voltage regulator, install a heat guard between the voltage regulator and the engine exhaust system, and install a modified battery support. The recall is expected to begin during December 2008. Owners may contact Ducati at 1-800-231-6696.

Yikes!

Bryant--didn't you have yours replaced? Did they install the guard as well?

I had mine done a week before he did, but there was no heat shield or battery-box-bracket thingie installed...
but I kinda saw this coming.

They put the main power electrical and electronics in the worst possible place.
Heat kills that stuff.
Where is it installed?
Right over the exhaust, just behind the radiator!  Roll Eyes

Why the charcoal cannister got the good real estate in the fresh air flow I'll never know.

From what I've read on the 1098 forum the kit for the guard isn't even readily available yet. As the recall was just initiated.

I mean what's the worst that could happen?

That actually looks like "flaming battery sydrome".
It was caused by the starter going bad and esentially shorting the battery to itself...
-Turning the batt into an angry little heater.
Why did the starter go bad?  Not enough gear reduction -it was working too hard.
It was one of the early production "bugs" that got worked out in the first few months.
The fix: All early 1098's got a different set of starter reduction gears and a new (I think higher torque) starter.
BTDT! (not the fire part, but the "new parts" part)

Is there anything on your bike that has not been replace??  Ducati should give you a new bike every year to wring out and find the problems.

BTW, did you get my PM or email?  I could use a clutch tool, and discuss oil leakage fixes in various places...  Grin

I'm have not got to email yet... work keeps interrupting
-and only read the PM about Lisa (there are others I need to check)
but I do have a home-brewed clutch tool if that is what you need

I'd like to pull the clutch out this weekend if I can so I can check out that seal.  Clutch friction plates do look a bit bare, so I may buy a new pack and use the old plates to fabricate a tool of my own at some point.  I'm off Friday, but maybe when you're free I could swing by.

I also found a major leak that AMS failed to locate during my pre-purchase inspection. The left engine case "plate" that covers the alternator/flywheel has a gasket that leaks pretty bad.  Fresh oil and old muck on left side of engine, nowhere near the semi-leaky clutch on the right side that they told me about ....

Nope, I picked up a nice little fixer-upper 999 for a track bike.  Has a few scars, but I think it will be a fun ride after a little TLC and some cursing.  Wink

Yes.  Save old plates.  They are handy for adjusting the thickness of clutch packs and playing around with extra wavy (or dished) spring plates or deleting them have a pronounced effect on the feel of the clutch (if you want to get picky)...  and good for making hub tools too.
Hell, I've got around 40K miles on the clutch in my SS... and the friction plates are thinner than paper ...the dust grooves disappeared about 10K ago...  still doing just fine!

If that left side cover has a gasket it was added aftermarket.
CaCycleworks sells them (I think Chris Kelley had them tooled up) for both covers. (Left and Right)

FYI: If you remove the gasket and just use sealant there could  be clearance issues with the crank position sensor ...if the 999 has one on the side of the case -I'm not sure.
(when you add the thickness of the gasket you throw away the crush washer under the sensor to keep the clearances the same)

No.

It sounds like a good idea... but I'm not sure they can afford the beer-budget that sort of work requires.

Interesting.  I was assuming there was a gasket, but without tearing it down, I have no idea.  Looks like a reasonable place for a gasket to me, at least if it were a Chevy.
