Prayers go out to the downed riders/officers.   Heal up.

2 S.F. motorcycle cops hurt, one critically, after crashing into car

Jaxon Van Derbeken, Chronicle Staff Writer
Monday, December 15, 2008

(12-15) 12:42 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- Two San Francisco police officers were hurt, one critically, when they lost control of their motorcycles on a slick road and slammed into a parked car while escorting a weekend toy drive, police said today.

The accident happened at 10:30 a.m. Sunday as Officer Felix Sung, 51, and another officer were on their way to San Francisco General Hospital to take part in a toy drive sponsored by a local motorcycle shop, police said.

Sung, a 13-year veteran of the department, and the other officer crashed in the rain on Bayshore Boulevard near Wheat Street, police said. Kevin Martin, vice president of the Police Officers Association, said the officers had lost control after hitting a patch of oil.

Sung suffered a broken neck, broken jaw and other injuries and is in critical condition at San Francisco General. "The fact that he is alive is a miracle, and we're extremely grateful for that," Martin said.

The other officer, whose name was not made public, was hurt less seriously and is expected to be released from the hospital today, police said.

It puts the billet aluminum on the motorcycle...

Ouch! A broken neck from crashing on city streets. That's freaky. Here's hoping they both recover well. It's a good thing the SFPD gets very generous disability pay.

That sucks.  Makes me cringe when I know how little gear they wear.  I might have my personal biases against the po-po in general, but I'd never wish a crash on my worst enemy.  Heal up fast guys.

I hope they heal fast.  Why don't they wear modular helmets instead of those white brain buckets.  Little protection indeed.

I suspect the solo unit guys would never go for a modular design. They tend to be Harley types anyway.

I was told it had to do with being less intimidating to the public.

Hope they both recover.

Prayers sent. Hope he will be able to regain most, if not all, of his mobility. A painful reminder how we should always be on high alert while riding on wet roads.

I don't wish anything like that on anyone. I hope they both recover fully and with little lasting affects.

That said. Why the hell do all the CHP moto dudes ride like idiots? There was a CHP moto-officer doing at least 85 in the rain on the freeway, ziggin & zaggin thru cars like it was a slalom course, this morning!! (no lights on attempting to simulate he was enroute anywhere)  Huh? Angry WTF??

Very irritating the way they "get to drive"'cuz of the badge... Not bashing here, just observations....
