anyone relocate the regulator or add a cpu fan?

Dang that little box gets warm. Considering moving it to air flow, maybe add a cpu or computer case fan on top of it (dont think I can still have it under the seat though. Certainly couldnt hurt if it extends the life of it.

My girlfriends had that on her's for about 3 years now. never a problem.

I locate mine under the head tube so they have a full air flow. If you do, you can pitch the heat sink plate.

RB

Mines....just made a new plate from aluminum, so as to act as a large heat sink.

I now have 2 regulators on my S4 one under the seat disconnected as a spare and the other in front of the engine hidden by my bellypan it stays nice and cool .

If it's getting really hot, check it's earthing properly - faulty or corroded earths are a _real_ good way to overheat and kill them. Check it's not corroded or powercoated or painted over where it bolts to the frame, and check the earth lead from the battery to the frame too. If it's dodgy at either of those places you're gonna be causing the reg/rect grief...

On later models, the RR is secured to the breather vent tank, i.e. no heat sink. The alternator puts out full power at all times (above 3000rpm) the regulator dissipates any power not consumed by battery charging and other loads. It will get hot.

This has always bothered me, having the regulator bolted to a piece of plastic.   The regulator on my Ape mounts on a large aluminum heatsink.  I've been thinking of putting a thin aluminum plate between the regulator and the breather tank, just to help spread the heat with more surface area (assuming it will fit under the seat).

That would help, make sure that you have good contact with the metal frame of the RR (the inner is encapsulation) and perhaps use some of that special heat conductive grease.

The faired ducati's fitted the regulator to a large heat sink and locate it in the airstream with the cooling fins parallel to the airflow.

RB,  Do you have any more pics of this.  I was actually thinking of doing this exact thing over the christmas holiday

if you would like i could take some measurements,...but that would take a day or two to draw up...in the mean time this is what i have. let me know if you would like more...oops i guess i am thread jacking....sorry!

props to Duck-Stew, i stole the idea for the key relocation from spidey's bike.

oh, and i relocated the vertical cylinder coil while i was at it.

Some Dude

Thanks for the pics I am definately going to go this route.  I have an older monster so I doubt the measurements will do me much good.  I think I am just going to take the plastic one to work with me and measure it up.  I think the harder part is going to be moving the regulator because mine is right below the head tube.

Thanks again for the pics

that location is probably the best, the only reason i could see o move it would be for aesthetics....i can't blame you for that

Some Dude

That's exactly why I want to do it.  I have this fantasy of having a bike with no visable wires, so I want to move as much as possible under the seat
