here's another reason to look for the union label when hiring tradesmen.

Not trying to start a fight or be too political but what does being union or non union have to do with this?  Can you really tell me a union worker has never done a side job for cash?

And yes anything over $10K in cash throws big red flags.

as in suitcase full of cash maybe.   I wrote a check for the RS with no problems at all and no paperwork.  And I regularly deposit large amounts at my bank without question.

So it's truly cash in those sums that's an issue.

He could save over time and write a check for any amount.  Nobody is saying save it in a mattress and walk in with two thousand fives.

Very much so.  And he's screwing us!

Very difficult to not get political with this thread.  Why is he being paid off the books and why do so many employers run this risk?  If taxes weren't such a burden would people be more willing to take this risk?  Would employers be so eager to employ illegal immigrants and pay them cash?  Could lowering taxes reduce this underground cash system and possibly increase tax revenue?   <--- no offense was intended by this remark, just asking.  Mods, if this post is over the line please let me know and I can modify it.  I wouldn't want this thread locked on my account.

the employer saves also.  From their side:

there's matching medical insurance payments that they don't have to pay now.
unemployment insurance
matching social security (runs like 8 or 9 % of the employee's salary  :o)
workmans comp

also lessens the chances of getting sued for wrongful termination and such.
Frickin' snow!

a) get laid off and need to file for unempoyment
b) get injured on the job and find that no ones insurance will cover you
c) get caught and audited by the IRS (or this happens to your employer)

Wow. It's amazing how much pity I lack for the OP.
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

If we all pitched in ten bucks it'd still be less than how much I paid in taxes.

craft unions are notorious for adhering to the codes and keeping people out of the profession. That doesn't mean union guys don't do side jobs, but that there's no way you'd find a union crew hiring under the table if they want to keep their union cards.
