Buried in this article is probably the best argument against wearing helmets I have ever heard:

am i reading this right? helmet's cost $29  Huh?

They cost "up" to $29 which is a relatively high end model.  I had one of those $20 price range helmets in Turkey.  They're made in China and absolutely worthless.  It was part of the deal when I bought a bike there and I was warned by another rider about what a POS the helmet was.  I didn't know how bad it really was and used it for 6,000 miles of riding in Turkey.  One day I set it on the bike seat and it rolled off, fell to the ground and split in half.  These things aren't really helmets, they're designed and made in China to just look like helmets so some criminals can sell them and make money.  The plastic shell is  as brittle as beer bottle glass and completely  useless in a crash.  I'm seriously sure the dried pumpkin shells are better protection, at least they will absorb some energy.   I don't necessarily like the US legal system and lawsuits but it does serve to keep this kind of garbage product out of our country.  My experience with that helmet was enough to set me off on a  "Just say No to China" policy. Very hard to do and I admit missing my trips to Harbor Freight, but...
