You have it all wrong...

you need to drink more...

it will stop all the headache and hangover issues.

You need to be drunk at all times. ;)

. . .

don't we have any doctors in this crowd?

painters and lawyers but no Docs?

I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV.   ;D

You know, at the risk of a lot of brick bats and derision hurled my way, I will go ahead and say it anyway.

Have you ever tried drinking wine? (ducks behind couch).

You mention beer & vodka, but PBR and potatoe rotgut and similar hard stuff wasn't ever exactly supposed to be good for you.  You never mentioned wine.

Decent wine actually has good stuff in it.  Drinking wine in moderation has been accepted as a good health habit.  Those goldang Frenchies god bless them start drinking that stuff as children (under supervision at the dinner table).  They grow up to be chain-smoking, fois-gras lard-sucking, butter-slatherin', ennui'ed sons-of-pregnant doges that live to be 97.  OK, I'm joking a little  (and no offense intended to the french or french-descended).  But there's some element of truth there.

I don't advocate wine snobbery and I don't cotton to those that adhere to wine snobbery, but it is a lot of fun to just explore that stuff through drinking at your own pace and desire.

There is a whole universe of wines out there begging to be tried.  The wine-making process is fascinating.  The untold myriads of vintages, years, tannin content, aromas, flavors, history, origin blah blah blah is actually kind of fun to learn about.

So, I'm just saying.  Try it.  You might like it.  And it might not actually make you feel bad if you drink it with your meals.  You ever have an awesome burgundy with your bacon-wrapped grilled sirloin?  It'll knock yer socks off.

That's all I got.  Good luck, Mother.

...or

you could go to the doctor and make sure you don't have diabetes.

either way.

last night after a beer I was a mess and poked and prodded myself

BP: 130/84
HR: 95 (a little elevated for a resting rate)
RR: 16
SPo2: 95% on room air (also a little abnormal)
CBG: 119
3 lead: NSR

so in theory i am healthy besides what is probably a lack of cardiopulmonary efficiency on my part
I'm a doc, Mom, but I've been doing retina surg for a while so I'm almost useless for anything else. [laugh] Sounds to me like maybe blood chemistries are in order (BMP, LFT's). If that's all nl, maybe see an allergist?
Coincidentally, I've got a friend who's an allergist and has had to essentially stop the drink due to getting eczema every time he does  [bang]. If anything comes of his workup, I'll let you know.

You need to eat something light while you drink.  I worked in Russia a few years back and there'd always be a plate of sliced cucumbers and tomatoes to eat along the vodka (downed in huge shots.)  I was able to drink way more their way than I ever thought I could and no bad hangovers.  Stay away from bread and cheese.  You could include some raw pork fat but that's advanced stuff.  Russians know a thing or two about drinking.

mom,

good luck with whatever you decide to do

Hope you work things out Mother.

I don't drink much either, I'm a lightweight now and get drunk on half a bottle of beer.  I'm usually the designated driver.

Wine is generally more associated with headaches and other side effects than other forms of alcohol - it's all the sulfites.

Neglecting the fact that box wines are  [puke]

Sulfites are added to wine (and other foods) as a preservative, so yes they are in box wines. Certified Organic wines don't have sulfites as far as I know...but most others do.
