I had a nice ride today and parked behind my wife's BMW X5.  She asked me to pick up the kids from school and I hopped in her car and ran my bike over.  I hit it pretty good.  I bent the gear shifter and linkage, broke the front fender, broke the clutch lever, and put a few scathes in other places.  The thing that worries me the most are the forks.  They don't look too bad, but who knows.  I'm going to try and bend the gear shifter and linkage to get the bike where I can take it for a spin to check the forks.  Does anyone have any pointers as to what to look for?  Damn this sucks!

Sorry to hear about that, man.  I know it sucks bad, but it'll get better.  Sounds like mostly superficial damage that you'll be able to repair yourself, which is definitely a good thing.  Chances are that once you get it rideable you'll be able to tell if things are tweaked beyond what you can see at a glance.  If you're still worried that the front end is damaged, by all means take it to your dealer and have them check it out to make sure it's all properly aligned and straight.  Worse case scenario, it needs some major work, but it's insured and all you pay is your deductible.  That is what it's for so don't be afraid to use it.  In most cases, insurance rates go up due to moving violations such as speeding and running red lights, which show a pattern of dangerous driving.  Clearly not the case here so don't be shy about using your policy and getting it fixed 100% if it's really damaged.  Anyway, we all feel your pain and hope for a good result.  Keep us posted, buddy.

Wow, that sucks.  You have two choices.  Ride the bike and see if it handles funny.  After all if the forks are bent and it is so slight that you can't feel it, then it doesn't matter.  The other option is to remove the forks and roll them on a flat surface to see if they are bent.

This reminds me of the time my friend drove through my garage door.  He pulled up in the driveway, stopped the car, and then proceeded to open the drivers door and step out of the car.  The only problem is that the car was still running and in gear.

Yeah it sucks, I almost felt like puking and I tried to blame my wife because it's hard to see out the back of her SUV, but then again, I'm glad I didn't go down with the bike.

If I were your wife, I'd be kicking your ass for dinging up my Bimmer with your bike.  cheeky

(Seriously though, that sucks. Sounds like something I would do)

Well now if you were real crafty you could spin this to your favor and upgrade to Ohlins. Evil

Ouch dude...  Sorry but I guess it could have come out worse.

One question though <ducks> didn't you think SHE might run it over if you parked right behind her SUV?!?  (had to say it)

Too bad you can't sue the driver cheeky  Sorry, I couldn't resist.  Before condemning the forks loosen the tripples and realign the forks.  Sometimes they just twist in the trippls..

Good can come of this.

1) Take pictures

2) Call work, tell them you were involved in a "motorcycle accident"

3) Fix the bike to rideable quickly, and go on a short moto four day trip.

4) Leave early the next couple of weeks "because of the pain" Be sure to show photos of the wrecked bike around.

Great minds think alike.

Sorry to hear you ran your bike over - get those parking sensors installed on the X5so it doesn't happen again.

You'll know if the forks are bent they will start leaking oil.

otherwise that totally sucks

It's tough to know that you caused yourself so much pain too

Drink heavily

reallly heavily and then find a better place to park

at least you ran it over, and not your wife...

Also, the forks could certainly be bent without having any kind of a leak.

Good advice on triple twisting.

It has sensors, I was wondering what all the racket was.  Oh well, if the forks are bent, I take some of the earlier advice and upgrade the forks.  Oh, and my wife said thats what you get for skipping church last Sunday to go on a ride.
