my dishwasher all of a sudden stopped draining and filling.  there's about 3 inches of standing water inside it, that never got drained from the last wash run.  i just did a 'rinse only' cycle and it didn't fill, but operated normally otherwise and then did not drain.  then, i ran the 'pots n pans' cycle and i got the same result.

what i'm wondering is: would it be a good idea to pour some drano into the dishwasher?

thanks for any help!

pull it out from under the  counter, turn off the water and check all the hose connections. probably food stuck in the drain line.

cool!     just one thing- i'm in an apartment building and all units are on the same boiler.  at one point last
year i had to find the shut-off valve for the shower and after extensive search and destroy i located it covered
up, behind some drywall  [evil]

do you think there will be a shut-off somewhere near or in the kitchen area?...i would assume so, since
dishwasher repair/replacement is inevitable in normal conditions....

i'm going on a search.  maybe the shut-off is behind the dishwasher...

thanks Bob's, i'll let you know...

I'm going with food stuck in the drain screen.

Give me the Brand and Model and I'll get you a diagram on what to take out to check the drain.

There should be a label with the numbers either on the inside edge of the door or on the inside of the tub just before the seal.

okay- it's a:

G.E. 'Nautilus'

model number:   GSD4500GOOWW

(I cannot tell if the 'O's in that model number are zeroes or letter o's; there's no strike through
if they are zeroes)

thanks!

FYI, shutoff valve should be under the sink, on a tee off of the hot water line.

These diagrams suck... but it will give some of an idea.

This definitely sounds like a drain issue.

You'll need to start with a shop vac and clean out the water that is in there.  You may need to take the spray arm off to access the drain cover (p/n 506).  Once the cover is off, I'm lost with this model, but many will have crap stuck all over under the cover.

Is your drain hose connected to a garbage disposal unit in your sink?  If so, like BP said, you may have food in the drain.  I've used to see quite a few with grease build-up in the drain hose as well.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, I used to do appliance repair, but I'm more familiar with Whirlpool and Maytag.

Make sure to get the water out of the tub before disconnecting the drain hose!

Here's a link to the owner's manual.  Might check the troubleshooting guide for tips on what to look for.
