Are there any SCUBA divers here?  If so, what's your favorite (nearest) place to go?

Cozumel. To get anywhere close that's good you'll end up spending a bunch of cash. Cheap flights there pop up a lot, and there are some cheap hotels. There are also some expensive ones :)
Once you factor in the quality and quantity of dives, it's not bad.

In terms of "real" local - I got nuthin' for ya. Not into quarries.

Outer Banks is good if you like wrecks.

There's also a guy on the Eastern Shore who runs an underwater archaeology program looking for wrecks. Cold. Strong currents. Zero viz stuff. He's doing a field school on archaeological reconnaissance in the Chesapeake Bay this summer. You've also got to sign a waiver to not divulge any wrecks found. Too many people reading Shadow Divers, etc. think it's OK to pry everything and anything off the wrecks.

Nothing good close by. My favorite place: Palau, Guam & FSM.

Close by??  Probably Cozumel - been certified since 1987.   [thumbsup]
Some people are like Slinkies. They're really good for nothing; however, they can still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

The Graveyard of the Atlantic!

We dove out of Moorehead City. They've got a U-Boat! U-352:

Warning: it's cold, the viz can be low, and the currents swift (note how much we're pulled off the horizontal):

It was after this trip (6+ hours drive from DC, long boat trip to the site, short dive time) that I realized what a bargain Cozumel really is. However, if you like wrecks, the Outer Bank region can't be beat.

I knew there was some stuff off the outerbanks...but I'm a warm water person!
