I haven't been on this site in months. I just spent  far too long reading this thread. All I can think is that either

A) I hope to god that some day my life is so worry free that I have the time to work myself into a lather over a snowman

or

B) I hope to god that my life is never so damn boring that I ever work myself into a lather over a snowman

No I didn't miss that part. I was pointing out to the other poster that your first contact with the kid/mother was through the police.

I'm not saying you did the wrong thing. I'm just saying I wouldn't have escalated it to that level without trying to resolve it myself first.

I understand what you were saying, and I still firmly support calling the cops. Parents these days have a tendency to protect their child. "Not my little Billy, he would never do that." type attitude. The kid now knows that you can't ruin others property.

Yes I know it is "just" a snowman but it represents more.

My neighbor that moved away accused the 2 boys next door to him of breaking his siding by throwing rocks at it, and confronted their parents.  The kids then accused the neighbor of "illegal acts"  on them, and things escalated quickly.  The kids damn well did it, 4 other neighbors saw them do it daily, I saw them do it on occasion.

It just sucks that some parents 1) will not control their kids to start with, and 2) will not own up to it when they find out they are being sh!ts

Well, maybe it was a bit of wishful thinking, but the mom has not come over. I expected her to do what I would have in this situation, drag his little ass over here and make him apologize. Maybe my standards and expectations are a little too high.  I personally would be thankful I didn't get a call from juvenile hall saying come pick him up if I was his mother...

You need to put up signs that say "Trespassers will be violated".

So your first contact with her was through the [leo].  Now you're surprised that she didn't immediately come over to your house and introduce herself as the mom whose kid beat up your snowman?   Really?

Yup, really. Cause that's what someone who has any control over their kids and respect for their neighbors would do...

Maybe she would have if you hadn't sent the police to her house. Not to mention you had the police tell them that he is never allowed on your property again. Now you want it to be handled all neighborly?  ???

OK, so apparently the officer did not get back to her Monday night. In fact he just got back to her this evening and she saw us pull into the driveway after going to the store. She came up and told us that the officer told her what had happened. She was a bit upset that we didn't come talk to her, but after I explained my reasoning why, she understood. She said the kid was in the house crying his eyes out that he didn't do it. We asked her if she wanted to see the video, of course she said yes.
We invited her in and showed her the video and she said, yup, that's him. We talked for about 30 mins. I explained that I told the officer that I didn't want him charged or cited, but I wanted him to know that he could have been and just how serious trespassing and property damage is.  We also told her about him taking the sunglasses on the snowman (what he grabbed before he walked away) but that we didn't tell the officer he took them.

I told her how things were when I grew up and how my dad would have handled it. She told me not to worry, he was going to get it good.

I have no regrets on how I handled it and given the same situation again, I would do the same thing.
There are no hard feelings between her and us and she was very apologetic and said he would be over tomorrow to apologize to my daughter himself.
