Some kids need compliance by fear. This is not the same situation as with a group of kids. You have a group of kids with nothing better to do than entertain each other by seeing how far they can take things. Here, this kid was by himself and not trying to impress anyone else...

...and the reality is that's how society is structured for the most part -- most people don't speed in their cars for fear of being fined (or arrested).  few of us punch our bosses in the nose even if he deserves it -- why?  fear of punishment, not because it isn't the right thing to do.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Nobody complained about the kid knocking the head off the first 3 times, so now the 4th he gets the po-po at his door?

Who's to say he did it the first 3 times?

Sure, one would suppose the kids is guilty, but one would suppose asking the kid to not touch your snowman would be enough deterrent.

Kids are kids. You're the adult.

It's not the snowman-it's the principle. It's about respect.

agreed. That said, it's a no-win situation.  You ignore it, maybe it escalates..  you ignore it, maybe it goes away.  He's a kid and kids do stuff without thinking.

Maybe now that the PD got involved.. now is the time to help that kid get on the right path.  We all get home, close our garages and seal ourselves in our fortresses.  Clearly the mom needs help.  Maybe she doesn't want it, but what's an hour a week?  Hell, pay the kid to cut the grass or something.  My sister is raising 3 kids on her own (widow) and it takes all of us to pitch in to keep everyone out of trouble.

Kill the kid with kindness, and next year you can both laugh about this.

no parental control...they make the beast with two backs around in everybodys yard cept mine..... why.... because I took the time to talk to them on thier level, and even went so far as to skate a lil with them. They now leave my shit alone.

That is indirectly supporting their decisions to mess with other people's stuff then, right?  You are rewarding their behavior by being buddies, and since they don't touch yours, they are more likely to touch others'.

I think that is a big problem with parents today - they act like friends with their children, instead of setting standards for behavior.

I am torn on this one, cause I have punk kids throwing stuff around our neighborhood, but also think that calling the cops is over kill.  But, we have tried talking to their parents, and that doesn't seem to change things either.  One neighbor actually moved due to the brats.

I didn't know who it was, hence the camera. It happened after I went to work but before my wife woke up.
I would assume that when I rebuilt the thing 3 OTHER TIMES that it was an indication I didn't want it's head taken off. Also, during the video, he's the only kid who walked by my place during the morning.
Also, I'm not going to the kids house while he's at home alone, as he shouldn't be answering the door.

The officer gave me two options, he could go over and trespass the kid from my property and give him the official notice and a warning about the vandalism, or he could give the kid a juvy summons and do it in court.
Juvy for this situation is way overkill. I wanted him to scare the kid. Forcing his mom to take time out of work and him out of school to go to court wouldn't be helping the situation.

If my kid did that and the other parent acted the way I did, my kid would have their ass handed to them! They would WISH they had gone to juvy...

I have read every reply back to this thread... I am still a kid will to most of you i am. 19 years old, adult in all senses and circumstances i have done WAY worse then whats listed here and it wasnt to long ago. I learned by getting caught. My parents didnt find out about any of it and if they did best believe my dad would have beat the living shit out of me... Anyways to get to my point the kid is in the wrong. No one seems to mention that he built the snowman with his kids one of which is 3 years of age! Why does she/he (dont remember which) have to keep REbuilding her snowman because of some snot nose kid ruining it? its not fair. And as for the snow being property or not here in MARYLAND if someone is walking on the CITY sidewalk and there is snow on it that you have not shoveled and they slip and fall it is a huge lawsuit for the owner of the house its out front of. Calling the cops wasnt overkill at all maybe it will stop him from throwing eggs at buses and cars and others houses in a year or 2.

not even close.

all I did was take a lil time to meet the kids, talked to them about their boards and that was pretty much it.... same as I have done with my other neighbors.

I guess I could sit in my driveway with a finger ready to dial 911 everytime a kid skates by.

kids will forever be kids... some have better parents than others.... some have more respect than others. every case is different, as is every kid different.

I don't want to be the guy in the neighborhood yelling "get off my lawn".   some of the best times in my life happend in other peoples yards. (backyards and fences are another matter  [evil])
Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar kicked me out of the band..... they said I didnt fit the image they were trying to project.

Maybe it's just my ature, but I would have given some bigger kids $20 bucks to smack some respect into that kid. But then I am contentious douchebag.

You guys would be surpised with the calls we get. The majority of them could be worked out by neighbors talking to each other. If that's been tried and failed, I am totally behind calling the police if needs be. I always ask, "Have you talked to them about this before you called us?" I normally get a no and then I ask them how it's going to look that the first step they took was to send the police to their house. Some people get it and take care of the issue themselves. The others? I'm fairly certain the neighbors never talk to them again. Why would they?

Anyway. I will continue to talk to my neighbors first and call the police last...oh and clean my guns in the garage with the door open. For some reason I don't have any problems.  ;)

Do you mumble to yourself and rock back and forth while you do that?
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

I firmly support the call to the Cops. The punk did this 4 times and needs to learn that there are repercussions to actions. Obviously he was not getting the concept that you don't "destroy your neighbors property" at home. Being scared by the cops my have been a good thing in the long run. If he did not learn his lesson, then he will have more involvement with the cops in the future. Might as well start now before it's serious so Mom may have a better chance of turning him around.
