Seems a shame that they hit him when he was on his way to his first solo exhibition.
I've been a fan of his work for a few years now, and have a couple of his prints.

Woohoohoohoo! Two personal records! For breath holding and number of sharks shot in the face.

my opinion

when it's my wall..... if I paint it... it's art, if I ask you to paint it... it's art. If it's my wall and you paint it without my permission.... spoon. I don't care how underground famous you are.
Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar kicked me out of the band..... they said I didnt fit the image they were trying to project.

So I went solo.  -Me

I'm not a fan of tagging, but I'm also pretty sure they could have picked him up earlier than on his way to a reception for an art show. It seems silly and like something aimed at making a news cycle.

He probably tipped them himself.  Adds to the legend - "I was arrested on my way to my first solo exhibit!"  Great publicity - he seems like a very PR-savvy guy.

Two outstanding warrants for property damage by graffiti...

Seems like a good move by the police to me.  He's wanted on warrants for non-violent crimes, and you know where he's going to be.  Instead of wasting resources hunting him down, wait for him to come to you.

Street artist?  Is "street art" what they are calling vandalism these days?
I solve my problems like an adult, at the strip club drinking on a work night.

he looks more like a 'inside the box' kinda guy, than a tagger.  Hmm!
Frickin' snow!

Quite possible, I hadn't thought of that.

Street art is more than just tagging, and some of it is beautful, and IMO much better looking than the bare wall that it was painted on. Some of it is social commentary, most notably the artist Banksy in the UK. His street art now sells for big money. see http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7188387.stm
or google Banksy.
Many artists throughout history have been maligned, and imprisoned, yet their work endured, and their names have lived on. I doubt that being jailed for graffiti will affect the value of Faireys work, unless it causes a rise in price on the secondary market.

Kind of what I was thinking as well. It's engineered to make the news. Pathetic.
