Replacement Seals

I need a couple of new seals that go behind the clutch basket. I called the dealer and one of them is $32. It was over $52 in just the 2 seals. Does anyone know of any aftermarket seals I could use in place of the dealer ones? I was thinking about taking the seals to NAPA and maybe they have a catalog I could compare measurements to.

You would have better luck going to a bearing/seal house.

They may be able to match something by dimension.

  My local NAPA store has a pretty good selection, plus they can get almost anything in one or two days. Almost.  Same for the bearing house I use.

I got the numbers off of the seals. I'm going to try my bearing shop tomorrow and if no luck I will hit NAPA. I did notice that the seals are marked with the size and some of the other numbers might be the type or style of seal. I just want to find something cheaper then $55 for 2 seals. One of them is about $32.

Could you post the numbers up please? Both here an in the alternatives to OEM parts thread if you would. (along with the year and specific model of your bike) Let us know how you get on sourcing alternatives too...

Are you talking about the large central steel/polymer seal in the center of the clutch-side case?  If so, I'd be surprised if you found that as a generic item, but very interested as I'm going to purchase the same seal.

Any progress on your search?

P.S. I'm trying to source bearings for the alternator cover.

I have not gone out looking for the replacements yet. I have 2 places I can check in my area. One is just a bearing supplier and the other is just a seal supplier. I had planned on posting my results both here and the alternative thread. When I put my seal sizes into Google there were many companies that came up so it looks like there are alternatives made. The seal I need is the big one behind the basket and the smaller one that mounts behind the basket as well. The only part I'm not sure about is if I will find the same style of seal. There are different designs for the sealing surface. I will try to get to it this week, if not I will be going next week.

Thanks for the update.

I drifted out the larger seal without any visible damage.  I'm considering re-using it...

I'm also trying to source bearings for the alternator cover.  I've found a few places on-line...in Britain.  :-\

I forgot the sizes. I took as much info off the seal as I could. Some of it doesn't mean anything to me but it might to the suppliers. The large seal:
Bavis LRS CFW Corteco 75-95-12
The smaller one: Baud 25L CFW 35-47-7

I know the numbers are right but the wording could be off. Some of the lettering was worn and hard to see.

I couldn't get mine out without damaging the seal. I tried for a few hours and had to wreck the seal to get it out, the metal surfaces went undamaged though. It has been in there for 42K so I expected it to be tough. If I can't find the seals I'll be off to the dealer, at least I can get them there.

Applied.com has the large seal.  Their price is $36.53 -- no substantial savings. 

Their bearings are expensive too.

if I can't find it locally then I will just go to the dealer. Once you add shipping charges to mail order I assumed it would work out the same. Thanks though!

It's a real pisser that these things aren't cheaper.

I have noticed in my searches that bearings and seals for our bikes are far more available in Europe, and they're cheaper there too.  :-\

BTW, I headed my case cover with a heat gun, and drifted the large seal out easily with a piece of steel pipe.

I removed it with the side cover on the bike. I could have pulled it. it might have been easier.
