NBC5 is running a nice (read: alarming) piece tonight as i type this about the "dangers" of "skimping" for 87 octane gas in their cars in these times of high gas prices.  they even brought out some "elite" and very knowledgeable mechanic that described all the problems that developed over time in cars using 87 octane (he showed them a valve with what he described as carbon buildup....it had like a freaking inch or more of crap on it...lol).  misinformation is funny.  hell, it wasn't until i really got involved on this board that i understood how octane ratings work...and to think, all that time i was being an idiot putting premium in my sentra...when i should have been dumping 87 in her.  /sigh

Some vehicles need the higher octane some don't.

IIRC, higher compression needs more octane to prevent knocking.

yeah, i just found it funny that they portrayed it as an alarming "epidemic"...leading the average joe driving a plain jane compact car that they're doing (serious) damage to their engine by putting 87 octane in it.  news outlets just aren't happy unless they're alarming the people...

i guess that's why i listen to NPR exclusively.

Dianne Reems.

I asked a guy who works for Shell if their additive package was in all the grades of gas and he said their best package was in the premium grade.

Techron which is said to be good stuff, I think is in all the grades of gas that Chevron sells.  So I use Chevron, if I can.

phoooy, I am using 87 in the 900 and just got 51.9mpg.  1 tank 176 miles.  I think if I take it easy I can probally get 200 miles out of a tank.

NPR's Diane Reemes... I just strated listening to NPR after being completley run-off by a sudden inundation of commercials on WRR.  The first time I heard Diane Reemes I sat there in my car trying to figure how I could somehow speed-up the play-back....  Like the audio was malfunctioning at 33 1/3 instead of the normal for talk show 78rpm (yeah I'm freggin' dinosaur, so what!)

Gotta love her though; good stuff.  Just don't try listening to her with three cups of espresso floatin' around in your belly; totally unintelligible  laughingdp

I'm afraid I've become a media hermit... I stopped watching TV, oh, 10 years ago, stopped the paper, & my commute time is almost nil, so no NPR anymore even...

that's funny since the octane of the gas doesn't produce deposits, rather the additive package is what determines the buildup... your best bet is to stick to the top tier brands and call it a day

I've been using 87 in both bikes for a year or more now with no issues...

Sounds familiar. I stopped watching TV 6 years ago and don't miss it a bit. All my friends know I don't watch, so they've long since stopped asking "hey, did you see this episode" or "that commercial".
