Hi.. has anyone had experience with a Throttle Tamer? I am having a little trouble with the EFI in the lower gears, getting some herky-jerky action. I heard that the Throttle Tamer takes that abruptness out of the throttle until you can get used to it. Anyway, since I'm new at this thought I would ask if anyone had ever heard of it.... Smiley

I have heard of it, and it is reviewed in this month's (Feb) issue of Motorcycle Consumer News.  The reviewer tested it on a Honda ST1300, not exactly a Monster, but summed up his experience:

After road testing this product for a few days under a variety of riding conditions, I have come away impressed. The Tamer has transformed my bike from being demanding to ride to smoothly into nearly effortless.

At first I was worried that the slower initial throttle opening might cause a sluggish feel but am pleased to there is no such deficit. I wish I had discovered this nifty farkle earlier and, in fact, left wondering why the manufacturers don't similarly equip their bikes straight from the factory.


In short they sound like they work well.  waytogo

B and I are considering picking them up for our STs.

You could also try going down to a 14 tooth front sprocket.  This is a very common mod to all Ducs to smooth them out at lower RPMs.

Thanks so much for the info. Actually, my hubby just showed the article in MCN and it is very interesting. I wonder if they have it available for the Monsters...I am going to go to a 14 sprocket also. I thought I was the only one having a little trouble with the abruptness of the EFI. I think it's an added challenge to new riders... I think I will write to them and see which bikes they can accommodate.

I had a lot of choppiness too with my old 695. I put a 14T on it and boy did it smooth out. A lot of parking lot practice too. I would just practice taking off from a start for an hour at a time.

Hi Ducgirl

I  test rode the 696 round Melbourne (Oz) whilst my bike was being serviced (I have a 1000s with 14 tooth front sprocket).

The twitchy throttle in lower gears was one of my major complaints about the bike,  I also found that my legs got extremely hot from the exhaust whilst sitting in traffic - it was a fairly hot day.  Was nice to ride a smaller, lighter bike that I could reach the ground on and throw around a bit easier.

Will be interesting to hear your impressions when you change the sprocket.

We are still in snow so it will be a few months until I can change the gears and get riding. I am sure looking forward to trying out the 14 and maybe using the Throttle Tamer. We just returned from San Francisco and the shop said there was lots of interest in it. The dirt riders especially have been using it for a while.  waytogo
