Doesn't sound too far fetched to me.  This same thing happened to an ex of mine before I met her.  Got drunk, big guy forced himself on her when she was too wasted to really fight back and she was afraid to report it for exactly the reasons you stated.  
So the fact that three came forward only after the first doesn't shock me in the least.  Hope they aren't BSing.  And, if not, maybe he'll learn what it's like to be on the other end of a rape.

They contacted police after interviewing the victim and the investigation revealed more victims.
