so i dropped off the a4 on monday for phase 2 of it's oil consumption test.
the dealer has confirmed that it IS burning oil...
enough oil to warrant them fixing it.

they are going to do new piston rings...
i hear this is a big job

i still have a warranty (until nov) thank goodness...
i'm going to ask them to do the timing belt at the same time
car has 90k on it ('08)

Good plan. If the water pump is timing belt driven you may want to do that as well.

A good dealership plans on doing the water pump while they're in there and it's reflected in the price.
I'm going to have the place I go to now do my Golf soon as, even though it's pricey I feel it's worth me not having to put a whole weekend aside to tear the car apart. The current crop of gas engines are timing chain, not belt now. So i don't even have to think about it on the Q5. In the case of the 3.0T, they were telling me the chains are in the back of the engine so damn good that isn"t a belt.

I think they should probably do valve seals at the same time.

edit...

do they even have a tech that has ever disassembled an engine?
