I'm entering into uncharted territory.

I'm going to start running ducting for the HRV....

and try to maintain access to the service door with out ending up with too much of a Rube Goldberg looking affair.

Heat Recovery Ventilator.

It has been discovered that when you build a house that is as tight as a bull's ass that air exchange is critical to prevent mold.

This appliance passes the two air streams, fresh intake and stale exhaust, through a heat exchanger to recover up to 75% of the heat. It will run 24/7 when the windows are closed in the winter. I may have to get creative controls to make it work in the summer when windows are open and we need ventilation in a bath or kitchen to remove excess humidity...or I could just let it run all the time.

Central Services must've blocked the first Tuttle video, I edited the video with alternative.. hopefully that one works...

So the HRV requires a fan running for the duration?

Unfortunately it does. The fan will run on low speed. The system includes devices to allow more air flow, when required, without increasing fan speed.

Theory is the saved heating costs more than offset the added electricity cost. It has been proven in Europe where they build 'Passive Houses'. Unfortunately our climate doesn't really support the 'Passive House' theory, but elements of the design make sense.

If the engineer in you wants...I can provide a link to the specs of the unit. :-*

The going price around here is $15-$20 with plenty of food in the house.
