Today went well.

While I don't have an ACH number yet, need to figure the volume of the house...blower door test guy commented..."it's damn tight". He thinks we can get energy star rated with ease, and maybe DOE Challenge rated. He also can test flow of the air handler and help me balance the intake and exhaust.

Propane tank was delivered and connected, will be filled tomorrow, and the plumber will be here Saturday to finish up and fire up the boiler.

We covered the floor today, and will be doing a little touch up foaming tomorrow.

Drywall will be delivered next Wednesday and the hangers are scheduled for the 8th or 9th.

Been in contact with a retailer regarding materials to finish the slab, and will order them soon so they'll be on hand when it's time.

Off to drop the truck at the shop.

I love it when a plan comes together

Energy Star is a rebate from the utilities...2-3K

DOE Challenge is just bragging rights...and you have to pay for it.

I'm pretty happy with the way things went. The tester commented that he hadn't tested many houses better done than ours saying "everyone knows how to build a tight house, but not many take the time to address the details.

I think if we had the test done pre mechanical install the number would be better. I was more concerned with any detail we had missed that might cause a problem later as opposed to the actual number.

I like rebates.

Its better than paying full price.

Seriously.

I watched a 10kw solar array with batteries and inverters sell at auction for $7500.

I thought of you and your setup.

Solar and wind power are both illegal at the shop :(

Solar is awesome.

I built the house oriented to the sun and any gains I could achieve.

I'm not sold on PV due to storage limitations. I am, however, sold on solar hot water due to the possibility of cost effective storage.

I will have a ground mounted solar array with underground storage of at least 1K gallons of water heated to ~160 degrees. That should keep the house and domestic hot water heated for the periods when I'm where the sun don't shine. ;D

Neat trick storing it under ground!  Never thought of that.

works well
a building we have a system at in Armonk, NY has a huge tank under the parking lot (no one seems to know how big as it has been there a long time). The two little crappy chillers run at night and charge the tank. Then they run off tank water all day. Even on a really hot day they rarely run out.
I'd imagine it would work nicely for hot water too.

Now at some of the newer Green buildings in the city, they make ice at night and run off that during the day

That will really last for 300+ days?
It's all in the grind, Sizemore. Can't be too fine, can't be too coarse. This, my friend, is a science. I mean you're looking at the guy that believed all the commercials. You know, about the "be all you can be." I made coffee through Desert Storm. I made coffee through Panama while everyone else got to fight, got to be a Ranger.
