But in my job I HAD to work on hot wires.  :(
for the "lower" voltages it's all a matter of how well grounded you are and where the current passes. In my case the 277 just went through my hand since I was sitting on a wooden plank. Nothing will help you at really high voltages, it will make it's own path and exit violently.
