I need to split some wood and do some more winterizing.

The alternator for my tractor is apart on the bench waiting for me to replace the regulator and brushes.

There is a bunch of corn in the field waiting to be picked so I can feed it to the turkeys.

The 996 needs the water wetter drained and anti freeze installed.

I could keep going but...

I have little ambition. :P

Ah... the wood spliterizing... thats my part time job  [laugh].  Planted 600 Eucalypts around 12 years ago...  and right now they're ripe for the chopping.  Only problem is... we seem to burn the stuff way faster than I can fell, log, split, and stack long enough to dry.  Already "stealing" wood from next year.....  [bang]

At least I'm saved from the anti freeze task  ;D.

I burned wood only here for over 10 years.

This drafty old place would require 10 cords/year.

I couldn't keep it up either so I put in a new oil furnace and cut the wood burning to about 2-3 cords.

Lately there is very little savings in burning wood, it's just that the oil doesn't really heat the place so it's warm.

There's nothing like wood heat.

Yup - we havent paid a cent for heating for the last decade either.. but sometimes I yearn for heating that worked at the flick of a switch  ;).  I recently commented to my son that if I paid money for heat I'd have more free time to do other fun stuff.... to which he relpied "Nah... you'd just get other more boring jobs to do... inside".  At just 12 years old he's wiser than his years  ;).

I have no idea how much wood a cord constitutes.... but I reckon we burn around 10 tonnes per annum.  Its quite a task keeping pace.  Although not unpleasant work by any means.

What do you mean that theres very little savings in burning wood?  Apart from the labour and chain saw fuel... its free  ;D.  I do it coz I enjoy the self sufficiency aspect... and the work is good exercise... and as you say... there nothing like wood heat.

You need a wood lot for it to be free. I don't own a wood lot. Lately around here the wood sellers have been getting enough for hardwood pulp to drive wood prices to $1300/truckload. That would be about 7 cords. A cord is defined as 128 cubic feet of wood cut and split in 4 foot lengths.
