Sorry to ask, how can it be that Tini's house has insulation issues? As said, sorry, I live in the tropics and worry about leaking roofs or no running water for almost, 65 days, ok no running water intermitently ...

The idea of insulation is to keep the heat from inside from getting to the roof and causing melting which then re-freezes and causes ice dams and leaks.

Also the underside of the roof sheathing should be cold by way of venting to prevent the same thing.

Lack of good insulation in the roof let's heat up where it melts snow to form ice dams that will back up under shingles where the ice eventually melts and leaks into the house.

Yup, that's what my house does in a couple of spots that I've yet to attend to.

It's all in the grind, Sizemore. Can't be too fine, can't be too coarse. This, my friend, is a science. I mean you're looking at the guy that believed all the commercials. You know, about the "be all you can be." I made coffee through Desert Storm. I made coffee through Panama while everyone else got to fight, got to be a Ranger.

Tini, you have some serious insulation issues.  Your house doesn't look old enough for that to be acceptable.

You're also very close to having water inside.  You've got ice running down the outside face of the wall so the melt water has pushed up the roof a ways.  You gotta at least get a channel to let the water out.

don't listen to them, they're just jealous
It adds a very tropical feel when you have a couple little natural spring waterfalls here and there throughout your home.  [thumbsup]

Tini, don't rake the roof for several reasons (unless you have water coming into the house);

a. the first and most important is that it's just another annoying house chore for Mike.   ;)

b.  the rake damages the shingles and shortens their life span.

c.  unless you can rake the whole roof, you'll just move the ice dam further up the roof.  The remaining snow acts like insulation and allows the snow to melt, that water runs down to the open air and freezes.  The frozen water creates a dam further up the roof where the roofer wasn't planning for ice dams and probably didn't apply additional roofing underlayment.

At some point during this cold weather try to find a qualified energy expert and have them do an infrared scan of the house with a blower door test at the same time.  (unfortunately these days everyone and their brother is an energy expert and most of them aren't qualified to close a door)  They should find the leaks and insufficient spots in the thermal envelope.  Made a world of difference at my place, no more soffit to grade icicles.   [thumbsup]

Yeah...I did. :P

With any luck the weather will warm and the problem will be alleviated for this season.

You know

I live my life at fire stations and hospitals

I hate them, they are the last two places I ever want to be

I took a much needed vacation last summer to get away from those places

Then those two showed up

You know where I ended up?

At a damn hospital and a fire station

So

That couch better be damn comfy and the dogs better be those two mythical stripper paramedics

:-*

Yeah, sorry my tonsils swelled up so much that they were pressing on my brain stem.  The whole ambulance ride, all I could think about (besides how hot the two female paramedics were) was how much you hated hospitals, and how bad I felt about having to call you and ask for a ride...   [cheeky]

Seriously though,  you, Dave, Carl - seriously good people that I'm honored to call my friends.  [wine]

Why?  It still snows there.  Ventura County, CA is where it's at!
