Got a brand spankin' new iPhone 3GS today.

Only thing is, in Kalifornia they charge you the sales tax on the original $400+ price. 

So, instead of whatever 7.5% sales tax on $49 is, total came out to $88. 

That's okay, though... It's still an iPhone for $88.00...      Also, on my next bill, they're giving me a $30 credit because I modified my current plan. 

All in all, I made out pretty good, I guess.

i don't think there's a rebate. i think it's the sale price when you sign a new contract... i just bought a Samsung infuse & i paid the sale price of $149, no rebate, but i was taxed on the retail price of $500

Kalifornia has some weird law that allows the state to tax certain sales items at the non-sale original prices. The iPhone was originally $400.  Even though it's on sale for $49 right now, the state taxes it like it's still the original $400 price.    The price we pay for living in Paradise, I guess...

Maine has been doing this with cars for...   ever.    You pay sales tax on what they say is retail regardless of what the bill of sale says you paid.  It's legal because the people who write the laws say it is.
