My initial acquaintance with a person (who became a dear old friend) began when I was 15 and I made the mistake of ordering a Bushmills

at his pub in NYC's old Chelsea Section back when it was still an Irish neighborhood

Jim Dowd was his name....he was close to seven feet tall, had a forehead bigger than the Frankenstein monster's

Eyes on fire, reached out grabbed me by the gullet and pulled my scrawny carcass off my stool and half across the bar.... up close and whispered in his Old Sod brogue  "we don't serve Orange piss in this establishment"

Then he put a bottle of Jamesons on the bar and we went shot-for-shot for a few hours...near finished the bottle

he wouldn't take a cent from me

His son fled the US and was living in the Irish Republic due to Noraid gun-running activities,

Evidently I reminded him of his kid....

even the Westies left his establishment alone for fear of the IRA

NYC used to be so much fun for me

The Pub closed in the 1980's and Jim went back to Ireland

The Daily News had a center section photo of his place with a closed sign on it

and Jimmy Breslin wrote a piece called Requiem for the Last Irish Saloon or something like that

It was the offical end of the old Irish section of NYC
