It's all in the grind, Sizemore. Can't be too fine, can't be too coarse. This, my friend, is a science. I mean you're looking at the guy that believed all the commercials. You know, about the "be all you can be." I made coffee through Desert Storm. I made coffee through Panama while everyone else got to fight, got to be a Ranger.

I want to post a question about adjusting tapered cage style wheel bearings (on a trailer)

Where would one post that sort of thing?

NMC, General, Tech, racing & track days. . .

I don't own this trailer, and I know the maintenance habits of it's owner. . .

I thought, for fun, Ill regrease the wheel bearings since I don't think it's ever been done and I have 600+ miles to cover on Saturday with it.

No grease fittings so I took each hub apart and cleaned a TON of worn out grease out of them.  I cleaned the bearings as best I could but did not use any solvent.  I got the majority of old grease out of them.

I repacked the bearings and reassembled.

All the wheel bearings I've done like this had 2 holes drilled through the threaded end of the stub, for cotter pins with the castellated nut.

That allows for 30* of nut rotation to really get the right feel on the bearing.

This Chinese trailer only has 1 hole drilled, cutting my resolution in half, to 60 degrees.

One side feels fine to me.  Slllliiiiiiiiight play in it, which is what it felt like before I took it apart.  If I turn the nut to the next flat, it's way too tight.

The other side is what's concerning me.  It had more play before I pulled it apart and I was able to reassemble it to the same point, and had the same play.

I am able to rotate the nut to the next flat and remove all the play and it doesn't feel too tight, but I wouldn't want it any tighter than it is.

FWIW I snug the nut up pretty good and roll the hub around to "seat" things, then I back it off and retighten till it feels right.

Am I ok leaving this on the tighter side of adjustment?  I don't feel that it will overheat and fail, but I don't like the amount of play that's there with one flat looser.  Is this the lesser of the two evils?

I forgot how much I hate my hands covered in a thick layer of grease ;D

As long as you're not preloading the bearing by leaving it at the tight setting I'd go with that.

Another option would be to source a plain nut and retainer like on a car. Is the axle a standard thread?

Probably not worth it for a trailer that doesn't belong to you.

Please clarify. . .

Say 1 = too much play, 2 = just a hair tight, no play, but doesn't really feel bad, and 4 or 5 = waaaaay tight where I just seat things in.

So, I tighten to 4 or 5, roll the hub around, loosen to less than 1, then tighten to 2.

[thumbsup] or not?

no play....#2.

The only time you'll get in trouble with a tapered roller is if you have it waaaay too tight.

Keep in mind you just re-packed them and the grease is taking some of the play out...that won't last long.

I do it a bit different, but end up with the same result

Hi Gang.

I see I've already missed the fun of Tini in a doll house and something about NOT asking Slowpoke to pitch a tent.   ;D

Speaking of tents, T, when I was a kid we used sofa cushions, leaned them against each other (like building a house of cards) to form the walls, sometimes using the sofa as one wall, and put a sheet or a blanket on top.  Might work temporarily.  It's not too tough to clean up either.  ;)

Inara: "Yes, precisely. Only the exact phrase I used was 'don't'."

I did that too, those were awesome!
