I never heard of anybody using a well around here......  although many farms have a bore sunk to tap underground water for irrigation/animal water, but not considered potable.

So yup, just rainwater collected from the roof catchment of both the house and (pretty large) shed, stored in 2 tanks...... lemme see if I can do this in your language..... one of 12,000 gallons and one of 5,000 gallons.

we dig/drill holes in the ground and drink the water that comes from them.

Some people in arid areas do collect rainwater.

no treating...

I have a drilled well that is basically unaffected by runoff. It is 430 feet deep with the pump set at 300 feet. Dug/shallow wells are affected by seasonal runoff, but very few are treated in our area.

Maybe the different approach is climate related?  I imagine since you have to contend with sub-freezing temperatures having 12,000 gallons of water stored in a semi-inground concrete tank could become an intersting liability mid-winter.
